The Economical Sustainability and Ethical Consumption of GMOs

The Economical Sustainability and Ethical Consumption of GMOs Genetically modified organisms lead most Americans into visions of dark chemical rooms, where burners are boiling intricate and deadly mixtures. These chemicals are then seen applied and infused into average foods, turning them into mutant substances for “safe" human consumption. Speaking on a side of reality however, genetically modified foods are not only safe for human consumption, but also may hold the key to ending global hunger, as well as creating a new form of food that is less harmful to the environment and cheaper to produce.

With the environmental aspects of organic produce and the efficiency of industrial agriculture, GMOs can potentially alter the course of agriculture that hasn't been changed since the beginning of domestication of man.

GMOs are the best for global production, contrary to corporate propaganda, because they feature genetically targeted nutrient to provide more of the essentials for humans while costing the environment and revenue supply less.

Rebutting False Propaganda and Promoting Alterations According to the paradigm of GMOs associated with corporate propaganda and the worst of modern agriculture (i.e.

chemical workshops, factories, unorthodox fertilizers etc.).

However, the chemicals used in GMOs are specifically selected to be the safest and cleanest of all chemicals to provide the populace with safe nutrients.

Many foods consumed daily by Americans are actually genetically modified. For instance, lodine is a chemical that is not found naturally, yet is extremely important to the human health, as it prevents inflammation of the thyroid gland as well as detoxification of our excretion system.

As our population was faced with a severe lack of iodine, the United States Government turned to the Morton Salt subsidiary and asked to infuse small percentages of iodine with their natural salt.

While the salt is being naturally harvested from saltwater bodies or salt mines, iodine is introduced during the extraction and grinding of salt to ensure even distribution as well as safety regards. Technically categorized as a genetically modified organism, it is now the primary source of iodine intake in America.

Contrary to popular disdain for GMOs, Morton Salt is still one of the most economically and publicly referred salts in America due to the lack of further knowledge and the nonexistence of health concerns. Furthermore, not only are GMOs safe to consume, in certain cases, they are actually healthier than their traditional counter-parts. Golden Rice is a new form of genetically altered rice that excels in its amounts of beta-carotene, along with many other vitamins and minerals.

Golden Rice is based in Europe and has taken the consumer by storm, as Golden Rice has been reviewed to contain less carbohydrates than regular rice, while still retaining the consistency and taste of regular rice. Now, these forms of genetically modified rice are not only replacing old forms of rice, but they are also being used to feed and nourish the impoverished communities of Southern Africa, as well as the homeless in high-density population areas such as China and India. GMOs have proven against the propaganda that they are indeed healthy and do not cause any adverse effects. Also, they can be used not only to sustain populations across the globe, but also nourish and save them from starvation.

Assessing Current and Future Ecological Damages with GMOs Secondly, the declining condition of our earth is leading scientists to develop different methods of farming. Traditional agriculture necessitates large amounts of farmland as well as extreme amounts and various applications of harmful fertilizers.

These fertilizers include gasses like nitrogen and ammonia, which can leak and disrupt wildlife. However, most environmental issues do not apply to GMOs, because they can be grown in a variety of different environments. All organisms can be genetically modified to grow in different environments and conditions. The gene revolution could fix all the world's problems about declining farmland and water resources. According to Forbes Agriculture Research department, out of 1,783 growth tests with GMOs, 68% of these subjects showed a smaller rate of resource consumption compared to their traditional counter-parts. This appropriates room for larger crop cycles and harvests, as well as a smaller impact on the environment.

Furthermore, GMOs require smaller amounts of pesticides such as DDT to be sprayed upon them, as natural defenses such as thicker husks or pest resistant secretions can be genetically altered and infused into various plants. Shifting to a technical viewpoint, if all laws of bio accumulation and bio-magnification are observed, most animal meat used in fast-food restaurants or lower grade markets should already be contaminated through CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Organizations) and genetically altered feed lots.

The rules of bio-magnification and bio accumulation state that harmful chemicals that are ingested by a living thing would hereby transfer to future consumers in larger and more concentrated toxic quantities. However, most diseases ingested from low-grade meat come not from the actual cow itself, but the conditions in which cows have been slaughtered and processed. This confirms the fact that the genetically modified food used in feedlots do not carry any potential death-causing diseases, and that the GMOs used for the cows are subsequently safe for consumption and do not in any proven way deteriorate health. GMOs are once again justified as chemically stable and safe to eat.

Darwinian Justification for GMOs Lastly, GMOs do not only represent a new type of science, but it also exemplifies human ingenuity and a potential savior of our world. GMOs have to potential ability to financially and economically support our own nation as well as others. A conversion or acceptance of GMOs could result in a better environment and a financial bailout to our own country as well as others. GMOs have the potential to save third-world countries from rampant starvation and malnutrition, because of their cheap production rates as well as their genetic invulnerability. These genetically altered plants are made to withstand temperatures and unfit resources that would kill many plants, such as the transatlantic shipments from America to Africa.

Finally, some of these GMOs are easier to culture and harvest in environments that do not fit the required resources for regular crops. GMOs can survive with minimal amounts of water as well as nutrient-less soil. All these qualities make these plants extremely versatile and productive. As an environmentally ethical argument against the accusations of “disrupting nature", GMOs do not necessarily skip over natural selection and other genetic evolutions.

However, scientists are simply speeding up and assisting the plants in finding a specialized niche in the economic world today. This form of agriculture turns centuries of plant evolution into minutes of biological improvements. GMOs do not go against nature, but simply alter it to focus onto what we humans deem as appropriate for the survival of our race, as well as the calculated research and usage of all of our resources, wasting nothing.

In conclusion, Genetically Modified Organisms are nothing to be afraid of. Moreover, GMOs should begin to become better recognized in the scientific community, which should be then exposed to the consumer's ideals. GMOs are the next-generation ideas that will revolutionize modern day agriculture into something more sustainable and economically and environmentally profitable. They need to become readily available to not only third-world countries, but to the general populace as well in both knowledge and physical marketing. This will help reduce our consumption rates and make out planet more secure in the future.
