The Deadly Sins In The Count Of Monte Cristo

In the book The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, the Count shows many deadly sins in many ways. Edmond Dantes was wrongly imprisoned, escaping dramatically and set to get revenge on those who wronged him, which caused many deadly sins to occur. The Count shows the deadly sins of pride, wrath and greed throughout the novel.

Pride is a theme that Dantes starts out with a lot of. He had just come back from his long voyage and is coming to meet his love of life to marry her and spend the rest of their lives together.

“I cannot think that man is meant to find happiness so happily! Happiness is like one of those palaces on an enchanted island, its gates guarded by dragons. One must fight to gain it; and, in truth, I do not know what I have done to deserve the good fortune of becoming Mercédès' husband.” (pg 23). He has loved and adored this woman for 3 years and was ready to be officially wed with her and coming back from being away from her for so long made him extra excited to be with her.

The theme Wrath plays an enormous role in the theme and story line of this book, The main reason being, him escaping prison and getting revenge on all of those who wronged him and put him there in the first place. “Because I have instilled a feeling into your heart that wasn't there before: vengeance” (pg 58). Abbe Farah, a priest in the cell block next to him helped him figure out why he was in there and who had done this to him.

After knowing all of this his fight to escape prison grew and when he escaped he set out and wronged all that wronged him.

At the end of the book The Count takes his last revenge on the final person that had done him dirty, Danglars with the doings of greed. “you still insist on your stupid joke! Why don't you just admit you want me to starve and get it over with” (pg 517.) The Count used his power over danglars to punish him, with the act of starvation. Danglars was asked to pay an uncanny amount of money for little food as a way of his punishment. After being let go and coming out for the first time he was almost completely broke and his hair had turned white. He was slowly extorted food because of The Counts greed and anger towards him.

The Count of Monte Cristo is guilty of committing the deadly sins, greed, pride, and wrath to get his way. Although the sin pride was only a small part of the Counts life at certain times, it was one of the bigger story events. The sin wrath shaped his story and controlled how it all played out, he would not of lived the life he did without being angered enough to get revenge and escape. The Count used the greed in him to hurt the ones that hurt him. The Count was a good person but used his resources and anger towards ungood things. In conclusion, The Count used these deadly sins, greed, pride, and wrath to benefit himself and make his coping easier.
