The Concept of the American Dream

Categories: American Dream

"

The concept of the American Dream is an ever changing goal controlled by each person and their interpretation of it. We ultimately determine our own personal paths which causes each person to have different ideas of the American dream. For example, in The Alchemist, Santingo finds that it is his destiny to travel to the pyramids to hopefully find treasure. During this mission, Santingo fights many conflicts that made him realize that it’s more about the journey you face rather than the reward that comes with it.

In Santiago's eyes, the American dream was to travel around the world because that is what ultimately made him happy. Traveling also played a big part in Che's American dream in the movie The Motorcycle Diaries, which helped find his true passion.

My American dream would involve me being happy with what I've done in my life, and having no regrets. Much like both both the novel and the movie, happiness is a big factor a lot of people search for in their lives.

For example, Santingo leaves his hometown to find a treasure, and Che goes on a voyage from brazil to Peru, in which he finds his true passion to save the lives of many poverty homes. Both individuals have their downfalls and times of weakness, but they never stop fighting, even in their toughest moments.

I believe in the novel The Alchemist, Santingo's dream is reasonable because he never had a lot of money, which shows that anyone can achieve their goal with the right mindset.

Also, Santiago makes it desirable since he didn't fear his failures, and picks himself up when down, and keeps fighting until he completes his mission. 'They say, I say' talks about the American dream not being related to money, and is shown in the story of Santingo. Not to mention, you don't have to be born into the American dream, you just have to be willing to sacrifice things to get there.

Although pursuing the American dream does take a lot of courage, there can never be an excuse for not achieving your goals. Some will have it harder than others to find their own American dream, but once found, everyone can achieve it through hard work and dedication. Just like the novel and movie talk shows, you don't need much just need to work hard to put in it.
