He introduces himself as a philosopher, a doctor of medicine, a doctor of theology and many more scholarly occupations which can be analyzed as someone who craves knowledge that frankly does not have any gain from having more. So he does not really take the bargain for knowledge per se, however, I believe he wants it because no one else can reach the level of greatness besides him, the Devil, and God.

Faustus rebels more than average and it is very prominent that he does not care about who or what he hurts along the way including himself. The key question is, what is he rebelling against? And to be truthful, I think he is rebelling against himself and the metaphorical two worlds. By him living freely he is going against what the medieval attributes of having God in the center of the world and trusting within him than Faustus himself to provide the means of knowledge and wealth. However at the same time he is rebelling against renaissance times because they are free spirited that God is not the center and one should not be fearful of what a higher being has determined for them, therefore having the freedom of gaining all knowledge as possible and putting oneself head of others.

Although we see Faustus going through the trials and tribulations of his selfish gains, we can all relate in some ways of being torn between two worlds that do not necessary agree with one another. As humans we all strive to be our best selves, but is there a fine line from being our best selves with the knowledge and power we all wants and being controlled by the intangible and unimportant things in this world.
