The Career: Being A STEM Teacher

The most impressionable time of everyone’s lives are handled by special heroes that don’t wear capes. These heroes have a purpose to shape students to be the best that they can be in and outside of school. They make sure students are properly prepared, not only for the educational part of life, but also for the rigorous, real world part of life, that is not be taught in a textbook. “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates.

The great teacher inspires.” ― William Arthur Ward. Being a teacher is not just a job but it is a purpose. There is honor in being a teacher because they are the ones who are committed to instructing the character of students, and ensuring that they will be fully equipped to handle real life situations outside of school. This career is very important and that’s why I’m intrigued to join the field.

STEM is an acronym associated with the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.

One of the main reasons I chose this occupation is because I feel the need to enlighten others on the dynamics of being, not only a great teacher, but an outstanding instructor in subjects that students do not usually care for. Math is usually one of the most commonly hated subjects for students after elementary school, and science tends to get more and more complicated as you go to the next grade level. Being involved in the STEM field is not easy, especially as a teacher.

They have to find new ways and try new activities to teach and keep the students engaged in what they are talking about. Teachers have to find a way to reach their students where they are at, and the best way to do that is through technology. A STEM teacher is molding the next generation of scientists, inventors, and engineers. This will help fulfil the rapid growing demands of the STEM professions, and also help to produce future experts that will grip the always expanding advances in the field. Therefore, these special teachers must stay ahead of the technology curve.

Many states have different prerequisite to pursue STEM education, but many of the requirements include a graduation from a teacher preparation program, an accomplishment of a bachelor’s degree or higher, specified courses of education, student teaching encounters, and passing a teacher certification exam. To teach STEM subjects at a kindergarten level the minimal requirement is a degree in early childhood education. At the elementary school level, educators may meet the requirements with a degree in elementary education. To teach junior high or high school it’s expected that one will need a bachelor’s degree in education with a specialization in STEM. The requirements for non-traditional STEM educators involve a bachelor’s degree and preferably some type of work experience in the career. Specializing in all four: science, technology, engineering, and math is not the easiest thing to do. The instructions, guidance, and assistance for it is always changing. To improve the number of STEM teachers, many states provide different options and incentives that permit professionals to fast track into higher positions as STEM educators.

Having experience and expertise in STEM, allows one to be introduced to many career options. One of America’s major dedication is to provide more Americans with the opportunity to gain a high form of education and skills. STEM industries are expanding rapidly across America and are an important aspect to the economy. It is becoming more important than it ever has, because it is helping to open up pathways to higher paying jobs, that most people want to be a part of. Though jobs are opening many students are not obtaining the access to proper STEM education. Most schools are not offering STEM courses, such as physics, and computer programing. For every two available STEM jobs there is only one qualified professional. The participation of STEM education among women, minorities, and students located in rural areas can absolutely be improved. There has to be acknowledgment of the importance of increasing STEM teaching among historically underserved communities to have the opportunity to contribute to STEM topics.

In today’s society, very few American students have skills or acknowledgement of the STEM fields, and there is still a very low number of teachers available to teach those subjects properly. Former President Barrack Obama made it a priority to increase the number of students and teachers who are successful in these STEM based fields. It was pushed that students with an interest or even the ones that did not have an interest in STEM must “move from the middle to the top of the pack in science and math,” the Obama Administration stated. The administration worked hard to meet a determined goal of fairness between different schools, where they would have excellent STEM learning opportunities and dexterous teachers would be able to teach students properly in order to motivate them to be a part of science, technology, engineering, and math-based topics and careers.

After conducting research on STEM education, my career goal is to become a professor for STEM based subjects either at a high school or university level. All the research that was available to me persuaded me to become a part of STEM based learning improvements, because it is very critical in this day and age. STEM based projects are increasing within America, and as citizens we have to be able to fulfil all the positions successfully. One problem we have to solve is making STEM based content fun and motivating to students, who will be the next ones to take over. If they have the proper education and are genuinely interested they can help boost America to being one of the top leading countries in educational performance.
