Once you begin to practice mindfulness and become more awake for your life, you will never be able to live as unconsciously as you did in the past. In other words, there’s no turning back. You will begin to sense the difference between living on automatic pilot and living in the present. You will be more acutely aware of when you are thinking and behaving in ways that are not consistent with the person you want to be. You will also be more available to the wonderful pleasures of being alive — including the joy of eating.
Cathy, a busy mother of three and a lifelong dieter, put it this way: “I can honestly say that learning mindfulness has been a life-changing experience. I never realized how stuck I was until now. I really feel as if many things are illuminated just by quietly turning my attention to them. Don’t miss out! Challenges: Remembering to be present isn’t easy when you are caught in the default mode network of the brain. About half of the time you are lost in thought — worrying about the future, ruminating about the past, making your to-do lists, or being lost in a daydream.
When you’re lost in thought, you tend to be more depressed and anxious. The more distracted you are, the more you will eat mindlessly. When you “eat without tasting,” you enjoy your food less, eat food that you don’t even like, and overeat.
The Good News: Mindfulness is the key to changing behavior, finding peace with food, and being happier. You can activate the direct experience network of the brain by being present to the world around you as it’s happening in the moment and being a better monitor of your body, feelings, thoughts, and behavior. Mindfulness practice helps you to set skillful intentions, be present, and cultivate attitudes of non-judgment, kindness, curiosity, and acceptance. You can strengthen your ability to be mindfully present in any moment through practice — both formal and informal.
