Standing Up For Your Beliefs

I believe that you should stand up for what you believe in. If people are telling you to do bad things or things that you don’t think should be done, then you should be able to stand up and tell people your opinion and how you feel. You should never be scared to tell someone you don’t agree with them. The worst thing that could happen is that they could keep doing what they’re doing, or you could have a good outcome and get what you are standing up for.

The book “Animal Farm” written by George Orwell has some good examples of bad things that happen when you don’t stand up for yourself and others. One example is when Orwell wrote “Several of them would have protested if they could have found the right arguments” (Orwell 54.) The animals at the farm didn't stand up because they didn't know what Napolean would do and they weren't prepared for what he might do.

The pigs tried to say something but Napolean had his dogs scare them so they would be quiet. Many people are don’t speak up because they are scared too and that should never be the case because everyone has their own opinion.

Another example is when Old Major said “Man is the only real enemy we have. Remove Man from the scene, and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished forever” (Orwell 7.) When Old Major spoke up and told the animals his opinion about the rebellion and getting rid of humans, he got something from it.

He stood up for what he believed in and he made a change at the farm. The change wasn't exactly what he wanted it to be, but nothing would've happened if he would've stayed quiet. If you ever want to state your opinion then do it because you can either get something really good out of it or nothing could happen and you could learn what to do better the next time you want to state your opinion.

An article I read said “Indeed, the freedom riders had shown that mob violence was actually its own worst enemy, because it turned national opinion against segregation and catalyzed the implementation of integrationist programs on the national level” (Freedom p.7.) Students that were fighting against segregation in bus systems were arrested, beat up, and had many bricks thrown at them. This was to prove that violence was not the way you should do things. The people thought violence would stop the Freedom Riders, but it went against them because there were now more laws. The Freedom Riders stood up for what they believed in and they achieved their goal.

Another quote that represents standing up for yourself is “Rosa Parks after she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white woman in Montgomery, Alabama”(Civil p.12) Rosa Parks did not think segregation was right, so she stood up for what she believed in. When she did not get her seat to a white woman, she got arrested. Rosa Parks did not get what she believed was right at first, but later she made a big change in the world. Rosa was someone who stood up for herself and what she believed in. If one person can do it, then we can all do it. I hope everyone will stick up for themselves and others and try to make a change instead of letting bad things happen.
