The introduction of social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram have single-handedly changed society and altered the way we view ourselves and other people. Social media websites have revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the internet. There has always been a debate about its impact on our society. People argue that the benefits outweigh the dangers while others claim otherwise. Even though it has its advantages and drawbacks, it is up to us to use social sites wisely, and exercise caution to ensure they do not fall victim to online dangers.
By now, we are all aware that social media has had a tremendous impact on our society, and on the world.
Social Media is one of the best ways to find and interact with new people who have the same interests as you. This can be great for meeting new friends. Facebook and Snapchat have made it easier than ever to stay connected with family and friends.
It can be amazing when you can reach out to friend who you have not seen since childhood. On the other hand, it can develop low self-esteem and a feeling of jealousy seeing someone else doing better in life. While many are careful to avoid expressing opinions on controversial subjects, others are less restrained. I simple “agree to disagree” comment can lead to a many unpleasant conversations.
While social media is a great way to spread news quickly across the globe, it can be spread unrest in society if the information is “fake” or inaccurate.
It has become a powerful political tool in campaigns and governing. It allows people to react to political events and issues, and engage in political activities, such as raising funds and organizing protests. Many times the social platforms can let mistaken beliefs threaten the foundation of democracy. People shape the social and political environment through engagement and participation. False information can distort the decision and sway the opinion in a different direction.
The increasing popularity of social sites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn have gained attention as the most viable communication choice for bloggers, article writers and content creators. It has changed the way most businesses operate and run on a daily basis where they have two or more different social media profiles interacting and promoting products. Many of us rely on expert’s opinions on a product/establishment, that businesses can thrive or can easily get ruined based on someone’s point of view.
The impact of social media in education can be tremendous. In our current situation, where we are fighting the pandemic online education structure is playing a vital role in education. Online classes, assignments, and discussions via skype, zoom is helping students keep up the momentum in their schoolwork. It enhances learning as the students have unlimited access to knowledge through internet. Additionally, it helps those are introverted and feel shy. Social media gives socially isolated children a means express their thoughts without being judged by their peers. Although, spending countless hours on social sites can divert the focus and attention from a task. It lowers the motivational level of the people, especially of the teenagers and students, and contributes to shortened attention spans. They mainly rely on the internet instead of learning the practical knowledge and expertise of everyday life.
Social media can aid students in conducting research and getting homework tutoring, but they have also opened another platform for bullies. Children can be greatly affected by these social networking sites as sometimes people share photos on social media that contains violence and unsuitable content, which can damage the behavior of kids and teenagers. It put a negative impact on overall society as these kids and teenagers involve themselves in crime-related activities. Because there is so much noise on the net, some students have become better at weeding out the unimportant stuff and absorbing what is important. Parents involvement is the best course of action, they can supervise and implement checks to stop any kind of internet discrepancies.
Platforms like Facebook or YouTube are designed to catch people and not let go. This kind of addiction can invoke psychological issues along with high levels of stress. At the same time, it gives people the power to share and make the world open and connected. There is no definitive answer to whether mass media is "good" or "bad". It stands somewhere in between. I believe that the benefits of social media are helpful to the world when used in moderation with checks and safeguards. Exposure to media is a part of modern life, it must be carefully analyzed and evaluated with what is worth spending time and what isn’t.
