School uniforms have been around for many years and many people debate if students should still wear them. These uniforms are constricting children because they are not able to express themselves the way they want to. Bullying happens no matter what; uniform or no uniform students are still going to be bullied. An important point is that introduction of school uniforms is likely to hide the individuality of children.
Among the negative sides of school uniforms is the fact that they reduce chances for self-expression.
Many sociologists consider that making students wear standardized clothes greatly restrict their self expression. However, self expression is a very important aspect of child development the introduction of school uniforms will be detrimental for children. It is considered that those students who are obliged to wear school uniforms are likely to find some other less adequate ways of expressing themselves.
If children go to school 5 or 6 days a week, they needs at least 2-3 sets of uniforms.
Uniforms are expensive, costing American parents approximately $1 billion a year. If the family can't afford several sets of uniforms, they may have to wash the uniforms when the kids get home. This can be tiresome and takes away time that could have been spent on schoolwork or rest. Some kids may have allergies or feel uncomfortable due to tightness and rigidness. This can affect their mood and learning throughout the whole day.
Bullying happens in schools with uniform policies. Students who attend schools with uniform policies may find themselves being bullied by others who don't go to such a school.
Although uniforms can create a sense of community and equality, children aren't blind. They know who is rich and who is poor. They know who is smart and who is 'not.' Those perceptions are enough to set the stage for bullying to occur. It may be better to teach students how to handle a bully and protect themselves than to stick them into a specific outfit.
