Romeo As a Tragic Hero Who Is Deeply In Love With Juliet

Many have said that Romance brings that love and affection, Yet if its taken to extreme it can lead to a great tragedy. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo shows significant tragic flaws due to him doing many good things but yet bad things as well, trusting his own fate and falling in love with a girl whose family holds animosity towards his own family.

Romeo shows his fatal flaw as he becomes overly attached with Juliet in the first place.

He begins the story by totally forgetting about Rosaline within minutes of meeting Juliet. “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it sight”! Here Romeo shows his immaturity. This leads to him making decisions based on what he was feeling and not his actual logic. “and never from this palace of dim night Depart again, here will i remain with worms that are thy, chambermaids. O, here.” Romeo is convinced that he will be better by killing himself for nothing ensuring that Juliet is dying to hear, even though she wasn’t really dead.

He didn’t think of the consequences of killing himself. Due to his immaturity, Romeo is to impetuous to be apart of a serious relationship, which is why he did things that were truly out of context.

Next, Romeo fails to have his impulsive nature. His “rashness’’ of action before thinking thoroughly, Romeo fell in love with Juliet so quickly even before getting to know her, this brought him trouble. Romeo is just infatuated because he can’t find a way to marry her so he does that in secret, rushed way which resulted on both of them dying.

Friar lawrence gave Romeo Advice but of course Romeo didn’t take it. For example, “These violent delights have violent ends”. After a few hours of Romeo and Juliet meeting they decide to get married, thinking marriage would help the feuding families, this showed his impulsiveness. Another example of Romeo’s impulsivity is shown when he finds his friends Mercutio and Benvolio in a heated argument with Tybalt. Romeo ruins Mercutio’s chance to defend himself and is stabbed due to Romeo’s rush to step in. “ i fear too early. For my mind misgives. Some consequence ,yet hanging in the stars, shall bitterly began his fearful date. As Romeo sits back and thinks back on what he did, he is haunted by it and understands that the “fearful date” is coming due to his rashly behavior. Romeo does indeed reverse his fortune, failing to realize that Tybalt will always try to do something dishonorable.

Lastly, an example of anagnorisis in Romeo and Juliet can be when romeo finds out that Juliet is a Capulet and the daughter of his family’s hated rivals. However they ignore the fact of their feuding families and they keep their loyalty with their love. As they continue problems rise. Romeo does indeed reverse his fortune, failing to realize that Tybalt will always try to do something dishonorable. Tybalt, Juliet’s Cousin does not enjoy the fact that their together, in fact he wants to ruin their marriage due to the Montague and Capulet Family Feud. “O, i am fortune’s fool!” He realizes his bad fortune and that this “fortune” is playing mind games with him. This causes both their downfall and death. This shows that Romeo was suffering so much over Juliet’s death that he decides to kill himself to be with her.

In Conclusion, Romeo was a Tragic hero through having a fatal flaw. His flaw was seen as he allows himself to allow his emotions get the best of him rather than to rationalize with his mind.
