Refugees, Asylum-seekers and Migrants

Categories: AustraliaRefugees

A refugee is a person who has to leave their country because of war, persecution, or natural disaster. Refugees are confronted with various adversities, essentially a setback or problem that can happen at any time, as they embark on a journey to find safety. Mahtab’s Story is a novel about a young girl in having to flee Afghanistan with her family and their journey to Australia. ‘Go Back to Where You Came From’ is a show where a group of Australians goes to countries suffering from war/violence for 25 days to see what it’s like to be a refugee.

Australia and other developed countries accept refugees and provide them with shelter, food, and education. The three adversities I will be talking about are fleeing home, death, and lack of resources.

Fleeing home

Refugees are often forced to undertake a difficult journey to escape the dangers of their home country. The novel ‘Mahtab’s Story’ explores the dangerous journey of a refugee family as they are forced to leave their home country due to war and prosecution.

This links to ‘fleeing home’ as Mahtab and her family are forced to leave their home and find a new one in another country with no warning. In ‘Mahtab’s Story’ Mahtab and her family are forced to leave their home in Herat and journey secretly through the rocky mountains to Pakistan and from there to Australia. During the truck ride to Pakistan, Mahtab was curled up in the back scared, trapped and unsure when she will be safe and free again.

“Each as still as a block of stone.” This quote is stating that when people are checking for refugees in the back of the truck like Mahtab they would have to sit as still as possible to not get caught. Fleeing home is seen in ‘Go Back to Where You Came From’ like a challenge as people are not really allowed to leave so they are kept in detention centers with poor shelter, food and water. These are simple human necessities that most people would take for granted every day, unless in situations similar to this.

Lack of resources

A lack of resources can vary from a shortage of water to a shortage of electricity. These are two very important resources for different uses and life without them would be very difficult. Throughout ‘Mahtab’s Story’ the family faces problems with resources quite a bit on their adventure from Merat to Australia, some resources more important than the others. A lack of resources is seen in ‘Go back to where you came from’ as some of the shelters in the detention center are breaking or in need of repair and new building which can only be done with a supply of resources which most of these detention centers lack. Thousands of deaths are caused by lack of resources during the trip period of moving to a new, safe place.

Adaptation to Australian culture

Mahtab and her family left to Australia not knowing that they have to learn a new language, learn about their culture and to leave behind Afghanistan. “Stranger in a strange land. This is not my place. These are not my people.” At first, Mahtab and her family thought they will get the opportunity to have a better life and freedom. Overcoming obstacles is seen as this example accurately shows how Mahtab’s family escaped Afghanistan even though they were very sad, uncomfortable, and unwelcome in Australia. Instead of freedom, they were sent to a detention center.

In conclusion, overcoming obstacles shows a journey of where an individual is facing serious difficulties in life and then finds ways to overcome these difficulties. Mahtab’s Story written by Libby Gleeson based on true events as the main character experiences overcoming challenges. Mahtab’s Story shows overcoming hardships through events in the novel, such as Mahtab being responsible in taking care and protecting her younger siblings, accepting their loss of belongings in order for Mahtab’s family to travel to Australia, and being open to Australia’s culture in their life. Mahtab and her family had seriously faced a lot of difficult challenges throughout them traveling from Afghanistan to Australia without being seen by anyone. Mahtab and her family faced things like losing everything they got, more expectations from Mahtab, and moving to another country which are very harsh things to face so they should feel accomplished and very proud of themselves.
