Learning the language covers different macro skills which will develop the proficiency ad literacy of an individual. It is very important for a person to learn and enhance those skills simply because those will serve as tools for effective interaction to others. Language skills compose of listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing. But I also include vocabulary. These skills are not easily enhanced at a given point in time. It takes a lot of time to fully enrich these skills. Also, we can develop each one of them in order to have mastery of the students.
Moreover, in this synthesis paper, it will tackle about the relationship of reading, writing and vocabulary and the importance of learning these language skills.
We are all familiar in reading. Since we’re a child we tend to teach how to pronounce each word, phrases, sentences and paragraphs. As to what I‘ve learned, reading is the process of getting meaning from the book and bringing the meaning to oneself.
Through reading, we tend to gather information and discover something. We read certain books based upon on what we are interested. According to Steve (2018), 'reading is a learning aptitude. It causes you enhance all parts of the English dialect – vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and composing.'Meaning to say, reading makes us to become aware of the language parts in the text. Likewise, Leipzig (2001) defined it as “multifaceted process including word acknowledgment, understanding, familiarity, and inspiration. Figure out how readers coordinate these aspects to make significance from print.” In other words, reading is not just pronouncing the words or phrases but also it involves deeper understanding to what the selection material is all about.
Apart from that, With that also, according to Sandhu (n,d.), “perusing with a reason encourages the learners to coordinate data towards an objective and concentrates.'
Furthermore, pertaining to ESP reading is considered to be the least difficulty of the students (Jordan, 1997). But this does not necessarily mean that ESP students do not have any problems in reading at al. (Jordan, 1997) Apart from that, reviewing the scope of reading in ESP gives insights on how it evolved. From the outset, it began with register analysis, where language used in a particular setting was being studied. With this analysis, teaching reading has given minimal attention. That is why on another phase of development, discourse analysis appeared. Here, T. Johns and Davies (1983) used TALO (text as linguistic object) and TAVI (text as vehichle information) as essential views of text. In fact Clandfield (n.d.) stated that “TALO is used for emphasizing the vocabulary and grammar.” For instance, finding the verb in the text. Likewise, she also stated that TAVI focuses merely on information. For example, predicting the content of the text based on pictures presented. More so, TASP means text as springboard production. Clandfiled (n.d.) defined TASP as “using a text as a springboard which students need to perform actually.” Meaning to say text or reading material serves as stimulus in order to apply it through actions. For example is having role playing.
Apart from that, consciousness raising approach is highly emphasized in reading and ESP. In consciousness raising approach, students are asked to analyze the similarities and differences of the different texts that the teacher provided to them. With employing this consciousness approach, we can easily teach the grammar as well the reading to the students.
In addition, writing is a language skill where it transfers the knowledge gained through writing. Writing in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has been the central activity of institutions. Aside from that, ESP conceptions of writing gives focus on helping the students towards the competence in a particular genre. Besides, contextual studies, critical studies and textual studies were introduced in ESP. In fact, writing provides learners with opportunity to apply their knowledge. According to Englishmate (2017), “composing causes a man to peruse and composes his/her own particular organizations.” Bhowmik and Naveed (2016) expressed that “great composition abilities are huge for powerful correspondence.” Significance to state, with unmistakable aptitudes in keeping in touch with, you can undoubtedly impart your thoughts and musings to others.
Furthermore, vocabulary is also significant in understanding the language. Vocabulary development is vital aspect of reading development. It is very important to know the basic words before constructing phrases into sentences. Likewise, Lestari (2015) defined “vocabulary as the essential dialect perspective that must be aced before acing English aptitudes.” Also, Nation (2001) further describes the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and language use as complementary: knowledge of vocabulary enables language use and, conversely, language use leads to an increase in vocabulary knowledge.
It is very important that we know various words through unlocking these difficult words for us. K5 Learning Blog (2014) stated the five reasons why learning vocabulary is very important:
To exemplify, learning the vocabulary is good starting point for better understanding as well with developing the language skills.
In addition to that, the Texas Education Agency (2002), “Without understanding, reading is a disappointing and silly exercise in word calling.” Yes, indeed. I certainly agreed that without understand the text you’re reading, you seem to be ignorant because of your limited knowledge. Besides, Davis (2016) stated reasons why reading is important such as it is principal to working the present society, an essential aptitude in finding an occupation, it builds up the brain, find new things, creates creative energy, and so forth with these reasons he defined, it is critical that we have extensive variety of interests in reading. So as teachers, making reading skill as enjoyable language skill would help the students to improve themselves not just academically but also to their future career. Reading would not stop in broadening the knowledge we have and would help to become a better individual. That’s why according to Van Dyk (2017) she stated “Because our brains are adaptable and capable of continuous development, it may even be possible for reading to increase one’s IQ.”
Apart from making reading as important tool, we should also put emphasis on developing our writing skills. Why do we need to learn writing skills? Gregory (2009) stated reasons why improving writing skills is important: it is in viable written work that we advance ourselves, the way we compose could likewise make us to be powerful and through composing we can help other people see more. And furthermore composing is the systems of correspondence, without it, in what manner can a man be remain in front without composing what he needs to state to individuals. Accordingly, composing ought to be additionally upgraded by the understudies.
Hence, researches about writing, reading and vocabulary should be further exemplified. It is important that the teachers should make these language skills as more interesting to the students. What we aim is the development of language learning of the students. Through also ESP, the relevant needs of certain students would be the key in order to formulate such actions that would benefit them. With these methods of teaching in reading, writing and vocabulary, we can ensure that students may at least develop and apply their knowledge through these skills.
