Racial Inequality and the Lack of Balance in the Land of Equal Opportunity

Categories: Politics

“With freedom and justice for all”, is written in America’s pledge of allegiance Yet, my whole life I have seen differently. From TV to real life, inequality has been at the forefront of my everyday interactions, In this country, many do not have the same opportunity for things and are not allowed to do the same things others can do because of racial inequality and/or socioeconomic inequality This lack of balance does not exhibitjustice for anybody in this country, which does not make America a land of equal opportunity.

When people think of America many thinks of the “American Dream’fl This is a dream of a better, wealthier, and less stressful life. Yet, many get the complete opposite, whether you are and immigrant or a natural born citizen it is still hard to obtain that “American dream” as a minority in this country, Racial inequality makes it impossible to not be judged by others in America. Someone will predict your past, present, and future by the color of your skin and physical features.

This racial profiling actually goes both ways but is on the more positive end of the spectrum for white’s people because of white privilege. White privilege is the advantage white people have over minorities, just because of the color of their skin.

They are positively judged and allowed to get away with more. On the other hand, people such as blacks and Hispanics have to work ten times harder to have what white people have.

This type of inequality affects people in theirjobs, schools and everyday interactions with people. Some managers for certain jobs are more likely to hire a white person than a black person with the same qualifications because racial inequality will make it seem that the white person more equipped for the job This is just a glimpse of the so-called land of equal opportunity Many believe life will be a lot easier in America, In this American dream, many picture a nice place to live and raise a family as welli This cannot happen if people do not make enough moneyi.

Therefore, people have to work Yet, according to Harvard Business Review, whites and Asians regardless of their gender, make more than blacks and Hispanics(hbr.org). How are others supposed to prosper if whites already have the upper hand? Now let’s say that someone black got enough money to move into a neighborhood with the wealthier, white people. This seems to be no problem but the fact of the matter is some white people do not want to live in the same building or even neighborhood as minorities, Daniel Denvir included a quote saying, “...anti- black feelings [are] driving whites’ residential preferences“ (citylab.com), Many landlords and real estate business people will listen to these opinions and follow them for the sake of business growth This inequality is what perpetuates the idea of white privilege The way you live ultimately chosen by your skin. You are sadly limited to fewer options. Many have to go into the neighborhoods where police brutality is high and raise a family there This never»ending cycle continues generation after generation just to remain stagnant in this country Betterjobs and better places to live are not the end of white privilege.

On top of that white people have access to better public goods that whites doi These are strategically placed within the wealthier neighborhood that have less minorities. You can find healthier foods and better public services in the wealthier neighborhood For example, in my neighborhood, Flatbush, we do not have health produce stores and certain types of healthier food options. On the other hand, I were to go to Greenpoint, I would be able to find one on every other corner. Another neighborhood difference would be the gyms. There is only one that I know of in Flatbush, but I have seen 4 gyms in a 3-block radius in Greenpointi They make more things accessible to white people, which gives them an upper hand, Having more gyms and better food options may not seem like a big deal but it changes a person's lifestyle These little things can make life much easier in the long run

To conclude, America is far from being the land of the equal opportunity. We are a land that chooses to silently segregate our people based on skin color. We are a land that choses to judge each other off of skin color. We are a land that chooses to perpetuate the idea of white privilege. The sad truth is that many do not have the same lives as their neighbors because they may have a different skin color. Therefore, America is no land to be proud of.
