Frederick Douglass successfully escaped slavery in 1838 by disguising himself as a sailor and using borrowed identification papers. He traveled by train and steamboat from Maryland to Delaware and finally reached Philadelphia, a free state. This daring escape marked a pivotal moment in Douglass's life, as he gained his freedom and eventually became a prominent abolitionist, writer, and speaker, advocating tirelessly for the abolition of slavery and civil rights for African Americans. He described his escape in the memoir Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.
