Frederick Douglass was an extraordinary African American abolitionist, orator, writer, and reformer who made significant contributions towards the abolition of slavery and the promotion of civil rights for African Americans. Born into slavery in Maryland around 1818, he escaped slavery in his late teens and became a leading figure in the abolitionist movement, advocating for the rights and equality of all people.
