In Homer's epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew must pass through the dangerous waters between the monsters Scylla and Charybdis. When they encounter Charybdis for the second time, Odysseus manages to escape by clinging to a nearby fig tree as his ship is sucked into the whirlpool. He then waits until the ship is regurgitated from Charybdis before swimming to it and returning to safety. This escape demonstrates Odysseus's resourcefulness and cunning, as he is able to use his knowledge of the sea and his environment to outsmart the monster and save himself.
