Prostitution, the activity of engaging in sexual relations with someone for payment, is currently illegal in most of the United States, but should it be? There are a multitude of pros and cons to prostitution. After extensive research it can be concluded that through the detailed pros, and cons prostitution should be legal in the United States of America.

To start, the many cons of prostitution and why it should not be legalised. Jimmy carter said that he can not accept such a thing that harms women.

He says that it debases men normalizing the fact that men have access to womens bodys, teaching children women and girls are just commodities that are able to be sold. This would not rein true though, because women would be able to choose to participate in these acts. It also is not true in the countries that have already legalised it, with their youth not changing their views. If anything, its being pressured even harder now a days not to codify women as sexual objects.

‘Pretty Women’ glamorize prostitution and create the views that its something voluntary, and desired. It makes it seem that they have a choice and want to do it, but in reality it is harmful, illegal, and involves pimps and sex traffickers.

It is a dangerous job, and legalising it would just put more women at risk to harm. While this may be true to some extent, legalising it would allow women who are harmed to come out to the police and report these incidents.

Currently, if a prostitute is harmed they can not go to the police because they risk being arrested themselves. Legalising it will benefit pimps and brothel owners. It is abuse and a cause for the inequalities womens face today, letting men root more of their power over these women. Often presented as a victimless crime because everyone their is consenting. In reality it is a direct attack on women. Most movies portraying prostitution in a nice bar is not real, instead it consists of them being abused and battered. Most also do not have much of a choice in joining, some studies have shown, because they need to make their money.

There are also a multitude of pros about why we need to legalise prostitution. Sex work is not going away anytime soon whether we like it or not. For the health and safety of the workers it should be legalised and regulated. Criminalising it does not help the people in it get out, it only makes it harder. They have to deal with more abuse because of it. Legalisation also does not trap them in it, some women being able to afford their first house because if it in areas where it is legal. While some people disapprove because it is immoral, maybe rightfully so, judging morality is chor family and churches. Not for the legislatures, costing taxpayers to keep them imprisoned. It flourishes in the black market which would not exist if brothelths were made legal. Similar to prohibition the black market for alcohol surged during this time.

Once it was legal again though, the market collapsed and was no longer sustainable for mafias. There are no victims due to prostitution itself, the victimisation comes in when the worker is assaulted or batterised. Due to this issue, there is no way that workers can report the crimes against them as well. They risk being arrested for taking anything to police, so they get robbed and beat commonly. At its core it's a simple transaction, money for a commodity. STDs are also a major issue and legalising it would allow prostitutes to get regular checkups to make sure that they do not have any, as long as letting anyone they are with know they are clean.
