During the summer I volunteered at my church Saint Mary Coptic Orthodox Church for the fourth summer in a row. Every summer I never fail to learn something new. This year I really learned patience. I was assigned to group four, which is the oldest age group. It was the age group that thought they knew everything, 14 and 15 year olds. I learned that I had to compromise with them. Give them a little of what they wanted to do yet have a reasonable amount of order.
I also learned that I have to be more friends with the girls especially because they respond better to a friend rather then a counselor.
I will continue to volunteer every summer because I do not only learn more about me but I learn about how to deal with others.
As a counselor I would have to check the kids in at eight am and check them out at five pm. Camp is every day Monday to Friday from eight in the morning until five at night.
When we went on trips I would be assigned four to five kids and they were my responsibility.
On trips I would have to keep an eye on all the kids and make sure nothing happens to them. Also, during the days where kids have to stay at church all day, there is normally a lesson that is prepared by the head counselor. The head counselor then tells one of the counselors to teach the class, because I was the youngest counselor I did not have the opportunity to teach but as the years go on, I will one day be allowed to teach the kids.
