My Main Values, Interests and Its Effects on My Life as a Good Child

Since high school, I have been my parents' favorite child. They never told me this or, at least, never very seriously, but it is clear in the way that they treat me that I am held in higher regards than my other three siblings. I am given much more freedom to do as I wish, and they do not refuse when I ask for money or something else I might need. I do not include this to boast but to respond to the complaint often made by my younger sister: "Why does mom and dad let her do whatever she wants?" My actions revolve around three major principles: honesty, respect, and courtesy.

Because of this, I believe that others, especially those in roles of authority, tend to find me very trustworthy and capable of doing the right thing on my own.

For me, honesty means being able to open up to other people, especially friends and family, about personal opinions, new ideas, and what goes on in one's life, whether those things be good or bad.

There were several moments growing up where me telling the truth, or someone else finding out the truth, to a situation I was trying to hide merely resulted in a very soft scolding or acceptance of the outcome. Because of that, I came to value honesty at a very young age. I remember a moment when I was in middle school. I told my mother that I had a boyfriend and asked if it was okay.

She was shocked for a moment but told me that as long as I still work hard in school, it was alright.

As time let on, I grew accustomed to telling my parents all about life at school and boys and whatever else and asking permission whenever it is appropriate. I have friends who question my decision to tell my parents what I am doing, even though I no longer have to ask for permission. In my case, it is simply a matter of integrity. I feel that being an honest person does not hurt and frees one from the stress and guilt that often follows from being dishonest.

Respect is just as valuable to me as honesty. I see respect as paying proper tribute to those people who have or have had a major impact on one's life. This means abiding by the rules that have been set by the respected person and treating him in a manner that expresses one's gratitude or admiration towards him. This value became most important to me during my freshman year of college. I almost had to withdraw from the university because my mother had gambled away all of the money my dad had worked so hard for to keep me in school. The university convinced him to let me stay, but it was hard on him and the rest of my family.

When I came home that summer, to show him how grateful I was, I started doing a lot of the chores around the house and the cooking. I greeted him every time he came home from work, and before I would go out, I got back into the habit of asking for his permission, to ensure that he knew how important he is to me, not just as a means to higher education, but as a father.

The third value that I find important is courtesy, which I define as treating others how they should be treated. I believe that there is a certain level of respect that is due to each person merely for being human. For example, in a conversation, one would not talk over or interrupt the current speaker. One would wait. One would not talk down to another person, but speak with him or her as an equal. Small things such as that I find important in communicating. Courtesy is taught to children at a very young age, under the umbrella term of “respect”, but it became really important to me when I was working at a fast food restaurant a couple of summers ago.

Many customers were very polite and pleasant, making my job as cashier very easy, but there were quite a number who spoke with very threatening or condescending tones, and it was a real nightmare. I think some people forget that the person behind the counter is human too, complete with feelings and tear ducts. Unfortunately, the service industry places customers on pedestals, and there are many who take advantage of that. All I could do in the situation was smile and complete their orders. Since then, I have been very careful about making sure I do not act like a jerk towards anyone, especially those working in customer service.

These are the three main values that inform my decisions in life, and they have worked to my advantage. I am not necessarily working towards any end goal in acting the way that I do. I am merely playing my part in this world and trying to be the best person that I can be. I look around at people who are so filled with anger and hate and I see that they tend to lead less fulfilling lives. My younger sister is one of them, looking to me and my parents as figures to blame for her misfortune, and I sympathize.

There was a time when I hated my parents, but I learned to love. And through that, I found honesty, respect, and courtesy to be the best values to live by. With these, I have found a good group of friends who share my interests and a boyfriend who loves me openly and wholeheartedly. I feel that since accepting these principles, I am becoming more like the person I am meant to, and, as time goes on, it is making me a little less introverted, a little less anxious, and a little more confident in myself and who I am now.
