My Dedication to Veterinary Medicine

Categories: Career GoalsJobSkills

I have always been enraptured by animals, and by the logical processes of sciences. Only in the last few years did I begin to connect these passions, leading me to Veterinary Medicine, which I have fallen for.

Touching upon areas such as neurology and immunology in my Biology A-level always triggers my natural curiosity. For instance, cytokines are mentioned so briefly in the specification, but after journalistic research I was interested to learn that cytokine therapy could form a future method of disease control.

The idea that we can use research to solve problems in living organisms will always fascinate me. Animal life is a series of beautiful and complex mechanisms, yet Veterinary Medicine enables us to analyze each component.

I have repeatedly encountered this beauty in my work experience over the past year, having been immersed in a working practice environment at a local vets every week, shadowing consults and observing operations. A role in which I felt a great responsibility was the resuscitation of new puppies after cesarean sections, where the fragility of a life was placed in my hands.

To see them take their first breath was a huge reward. I also hold a particular fascination for the diagnosis process, for example, in a consult, I saw a dog that had lost all feeling in its leg. It was originally assumed to be a neurological problem, but the dog’s paw was cold, which prompted the vet to change tack and diagnose a circulatory issue.

Alongside clinical work, I saw the necessity of animal husbandry when I spent a week in an animal boarding center and day-care.

I learned the consequences of not considering personal safety and limitations with animals when a lady broke her finger leading a huge Newfoundland. This instilled my belief that animals must be treated with respect, as they are often able to harm if they choose. At my work experience at a kennels on a working farm, a dog unexpectedly died in the night, and the owner was contacted not only to inform them, but also so we knew what to do next. Pets are their owners’ pride and joy, so an owner’s wishes are crucial to every action. I have experience on two very different farms: in the first I learnt how to safely present different animals, like donkeys, rabbits, and chicks, to visitors with children. The second taught me practical skills, like grooming horses and milking cows. What I love about animal experience is the variety- no two establishments or even animals are the same.

As a dedicated and empathetic individual, I would not be satisfied studying a course where I couldn't see the positive effect it has on the lives of others. I therefore see myself flourishing in the veterinary profession. I am calm and confident in stressful situations, and will not settle if my work is below the standard I know I can achieve.

I am resilient when confronted by tough problems and, through my Maths A-level, have learned to look at them from different angles and perspectives. I have an appreciation for the complexity of life, and the way multiple scientific processes are able to interlink to form a diverse variety of life forms. To me, studying and speaking French has improved my communication and my confidence, skills that I have seen are vital to become a successful veterinary surgeon.

Alongside my A-levels I am doing an EPQ looking at why homosexuality exists in animals. I applied for a selective partnership scheme with Durham University, which, after a competitive application process, allowed me access to the university library. This gave me the opportunity to develop my research skills and work independently in a subject that I’ve chosen myself.

I further demonstrated how I can motivate myself fundraising over £4000 for my World Challenge expedition to Madagascar. I raised the entire sum independently then planned the expedition in a group. Skills such as organization and communication were vital when working in an unfamiliar environment under pressure situations. I enjoyed exploring the biodiversity of the island, from the rainforest to the grassland village where we undertook a community project, assisting in the construction of a school building. Such an experience was always going to be outside of my comfort zone yet it was one of the most enriching opportunities of my life.

I have proven my dedication to the things I enjoy throughout my studies, volunteering at a brownie pack for six years. I love inspiring confidence in the girls I work with, whilst constantly improving my own communication. Another pastime I value is music. Since the age of six I have played the piano and intend to sit grade 6. I play viola in my school orchestra and sing in the school choir, and in Durham County Youth Choir, with whom I had the opportunity to sing at Durham Cathedral for Prince Charles.

I strongly believe that I would thrive in a University environment, and with my commitment and enthusiasm for the subject I would be an ideal candidate for the Veterinary Medicine course.
