Now that I am an adult I see how much work goes into making a vacation an enjoyable experience. When I was a child growing up I did not think about the work my parents went through to give me the experiences that I now have to look back upon. I only cared about if I was having fun and if I was happy. When I didn't get my way I would complain about small insignificant things that should not have mattered.
It is funny how the things I thought so little about then make huge differences now.
One of the first things that comes to mind when I think of vacations are hotels. When growing up my family would often stay overnight at hotels for mini vacations. I didn't have a care in the world. I got to sit back and enjoy everything that was going on around me. My parents would choose a hotel for the family to stay at for the night and that was it, that's where we would be going.
I would complain about having to share a bed with my siblings because I wanted my own bed. I also remember complaining about the long car rides to the hotel. As an adult when I look at going to a hotel I have a few things I have to consider before making decisions. I have to think about where I am going to stay, how much this hotel will cost, and I have to worry about leaving on time to make it in time for the check in.
I also have to consider what the hotel offers for amenities for my family to enjoy. Also I must make sure that there is enough room for us to all fit comfortably.
The location of my vacations has changed quite drastically since I was a child. When I was growing up my parents were able to take me all over the country on vacation. I stayed in Florida on the ocean, where I also got to go to universal studios. I would spend my summers in Tennessee with my brother and sister which was always a nice getaway from school. I also stayed up in the mountains in Georgia for a few weeks. As an adult my vacations have been local only, I have gotten about as far away as Detroit in a nice hotel but I have not traveled out of state because I am just too busy with working and school that I don't have the time to travel. I have found that I do enjoy going camping out in the woods for the weekend and it is a fairly cheap vacation. I also take more localized trips to go places like haunted houses, amusement parks, and concerts. I go to more places now as an adult but they are less extravagant than when I was growing up.
Another constant theme of my vacations have been going to amusement parks. Going to Cedar Point while growing up and visiting Universal Studios when I was in Florida are great memories I will always cherish but some things have changed. When I was a child I was always full of excitement and fear of the rides. The size was intimidating when I was so small. The lines seemed to last for days and I could barely stand still for five minutes as it was. The games and attractions always seemed to catch my attention too. I was always begging my parents for the extra money for a chance to win a prize that hung above the stand. I still find going to amusement parks to be a favorite summer time vacation, however now I tend to just go to Michigan's Adventure. Now that I am older I still get a little nervous about the rides but now they have become fears of the safety of the rides after learning about some of the accidents that have happened. The lines for rides don't really bug me anymore, I can find enjoyment chatting to the people next to me in line. Also now as an adult I see the blatant rip off that the booth games are. Having to pay three dollars in an attempt to win a stuffed animal worth about fifty cents sounds a little ludicrous to me.
Going out to eat when I was growing up was one of my favorite parts of going on vacation. It was always exciting because we always ate at places we didn't have back home. Also being on vacation guarantied eating out which didn't happen to often otherwise. Getting to eat at these restaurants was always a nice treat but being the child I was, I still found something to gripe about. I didn't like that my parents would pick a selection of options for me off of the menu that I was allowed to choose from when they could order anything that they wanted. I still enjoy eating out while on vacation, and getting to try new places I haven't eaten before but now I have to worry about staying within the vacations budget. So I have to plan it out a bit. I also like trying to pick out places that will create a lasting memory for my family like the Rainforest café in Detroit. I will always love going on vacation. It is nice getting away from all the work and stress of everyday life. I just have come to see that it can sometimes take more work to make the most out of what is available to do. Vacations require a lot of planning and work as an adult. When I was a child all I cared about was being happy without a care in the world. I hope that I can start to take vacations that are further away once school is over. I look forward to planning it out.
