Lord of the Rings: Return of the King – critical essay

Categories: The Lord of the Rings

The screen version of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy (written by J.R.R. Tolkien) is undoubtedly one the most prominent creations of the whole film industry. This masterpiece made a significant influence on thousands, even millions of people from all over the world. It is not surprising. Not looking at the fact that all the three parts faced the world in the early 2000s they still seem to be absolutely worthy. And there is no wonder. The story is incredibly beautiful, the acting is great, the stunning landscapes of New Zealand create a marvelous and magical atmosphere.

The special effects should also be mentioned as they still look very decent.

Sooner or later every story comes to an end. Thereby the third and the last part of the trilogy, “The Return of the King,” finish it. As Arwen said,

“From the ashes, a fire shall be woken. Light from the shadow shall spring. Renewed shall be blade that was broken.

The crownless again shall be king”.

In the last of the ring series, every line of the plot reaches its outcome. It is a time to put everything in its right place. It is a time for the last battle. It is time for the fellowship the ring to fulfill its mission.

J.R.R. Tolkien was highly talented. He created the whole new world inhabited by creatures who speak wondrous languages. He created such an amazing story, and the filmmakers made such a great screen version that each reader of his books and each viewer of the films feels somehow related to this magical universe.

The lord the rings raise a huge number of important themes that resonate with the spirit of each viewer. Moreover, it makes people think a lot and feel a lot.

One of those themes is friendship. It gives us very bright examples of a true relationship. It portrays the evolution of friendship of Frodo and Sam and teaches us to forgive and help each other no matter what. It also depicts a friendship between Merry and Pippin and shows us that no vicissitudes of fate can set true friends apart. It beautifully describes that no racial differences can be a barrier to friendship, and a heartwarming moment during the last part of the trilogy, the return the king, displays it. In a few seconds before the last battle, Gimli says:

“Never thought I'd die fighting side by side with an Elf,”

and Legolas replays:

“What about side by side with a friend?”.

Gimli smiles:

“Aye. I could do that”.

It is a well-known fact that the dwarfs and elves hate each other, but this short dialogue shows us that no prejudice can be a hindrance to friendship.

Another theme that is reflected in this film is a theme of bravery. It shows that you can act bravely even when you are full of fear. It teaches us that no matter how horrible the situation is, we must not lose the courage, especially when our friends need our help. Warriors know that they have almost no hope to win the battle (or “just a fool’s hope”), but they still do their duty and fight the evil. It is the only right choice – never to give up, no matter what.

The movie also shows the power of a woman. There are three main women figures in the story – Arwen, Galadriel, and Eowyn. All of them played a significant role in the story. All of them helped men in hard situations and during the fight. Eowyn even fought side by side with other heroes in the battle for the city of Minas Tirith. The frightful army of the dark lord was led by the Lord of the Nazgul, and no living man could hinder him. Ironically, he was killed by a woman, Eowyn.

Every line of the story meets a denouement, and the ring power is destroyed. However, according to Gandalf the gray aka Gandalf the white, the journey doesn’t end here. The time of elves comes to an end, and there comes the time of the dominion of men. Something ends, something new replaces it, just like in our world. Sometimes it may be sad, but it is natural, and we have no other choice but to accept it.
