Local Hero - Creative Writing

Categories: HeroWriting

It was a normal weekday morning for Greg. He was a scruffy chap, his hair was everywhere, he had a very pale face as if he was ill and he had a dress sense of a 1960's hippie. He didn't have many friends he only had the odd two or three. He was a lonely individual because he found it hard to make friends after his parents had died in a tragic car accident; in the early years of his life.

Then he was shipped of to a boarding school near his local town, since he did not have any other family to live with. Furthermore at his boarding school he was bullied and ever since has found it awkward to make friends.

Greg was getting ready for work; he did his usual routine in the morning. Having a wash, having his breakfast and getting dressed for his part-time security job at his local supermarket. He walked out of the house, shut the door behind him and locked the front door.

He sat in his old shabby looking car. Greg had had this car since the day he had learnt to drive, which was roughly seven years ago. He calmly drove to work thinking about what he was going to do today. Then the thought came to him that today was not going to be normal day for him. He parked in his usual spot in the staff car park. "You alright Greg, what time are you working til' today?" said a friend of Greg's behind him.

He was a very small and skinny fellow. He had dark brownish hair and eyes that stuck out. He was another who worked at the supermarket, but he was a shelf stacker. He and Greg would sometimes go out together and go down the pub and generally have a chat and sometimes have a meal. Greg had always wished to be 'a somebody'. He wanted to go down to the pub and everyone would know him and say hi to him. Greg knew that it would probably never happen; most people didn't know that he even existed.

"Oh! Yeh Tom I'm doin' fine how about you?" said Greg.

"I'm great my mum and dad bought me a new car over the weekend for my birthday. It's a Mazda sports car it's brilliant you'll have to come for a drive in it one day." Said Tom in a cheerful voice. "Soz mate I forgot, I'll get you somethin' when I'm on my lunch break........."

"Oh no don't worry about it, I know your quite tight on money. I got enough for my birthday anyway." Interrupted Tom.

"Anyway I'd betta get to work I'll see ya tonight maybe."

"See ya!" Tom sauntered off into the opposite direction of Greg. Greg walked to his locker in the supermarket and put his belongings in.

He signed in and went to his patrolling post near where the automatic doors are at the entrance. Waiting for the clock to strike six o'clock, so that he could open the doors to let everyone in. Greg had a gut feeling that this was going to be his day, but he wasn't sure why. He kept a good look out for people that looked suspicious to him. Everything looked fine to him, nothing was out of place. But something just; did not seem right to him. He was thinking to himself, had locked the front door or had turned the television off, left his mobile phone in the car. He just stopped himself from thinking and just looked around him and listened. He noticed that no one was walking in or out. He went to look outside but the doors would not open. He remembered opening them. Suddenly he heard a scream from behind him and a gun shot. Greg thought to himself what he should do. He went to grab his phone from the pouch on his belt, but it wasn't there.

He remembered that he had left it in his locker. He remembered all of the defence classes that he took to become a security. He thought to himself that this is his moment to shine. He cautiously peeped round the corner to see what was happening. There was a bloke holding a gun to a cashiers head shouting at her. "Give me the money or do you want a bullet in your head!" Greg couldn't make out the face of the robber; he had a balaclava covering his head. He was a rough bloke. His voice said it all; in a low voice he meant business. Greg started to hesitate, he knew that he wouldn't be able take him on. "What the hell I have nothing to lose." Greg ran as fast as his little legs would take him, he jumped up onto the robbers back. "Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrhhhhh! Get off me you idiot, do you want me to shot you or somethin'. Try me!"

"No! I'm takin you down!"

"We'll see about that then won't we." The robber was trying to get Greg of his back. But Greg was holding on as tight as his he could. The robber was too strong though; Greg was starting to lose his grip on the robber. Greg began to kick at the robber to see if he could kick the gun out of his hand. He was about to slip off his back, he knew that he only had a few more attempts to make him drop the gun. He went for one last kick, and struck the robber in the kidney and fell to the floor.

Luckily enough when the robber smacked to the hard tiled floor, he dropped the gun. It now was a good thirty metres away from them. "I've got you now." Said Greg in a self-assured tone of voice. He ran up to the robber and kicked him in the face, his head snapped back like a whip. The bloke fell crashing to the floor. He got back up and punched Greg in the face. Greg went flying to the floor, he smacked his elbow onto the floor he heard a crack.

He felt a sharp pain run down his arm. "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrhhhhh!" He cried out in pain. But foolishly he carried on trying to get the robber on the floor. Luckily enough it was his left arm; his weakest arm. So he was able to carry on hitting him. The robber was looking around; he had his back towards Greg. Greg took his time getting up and pounced on him. The robbers legs gave way and fell to the ground, he smashed his head. Greg noticed that the robber had stopped moving. "Can someone watch him? While I go and get some help." He ran to the nearest phone. "Can I have the police round to the main Tesco supermarket on Broadway Road? It's an emergency there has been an armed robbery, the robber is unconscious, and so we might need an ambulance. Hurry?"

"They'll be there as quick as they can, just keep the robber under control, make sure that he can't harm anyone." Said the emergency operator.

"O.k. will do."

"Bye then"

"Thanks for your help."

The next day on Saturday he woke up and went to the newsagents down the road. He crouched down to the local newspaper. He paid for it and looked at the front page. On it, it read 'Local Hero Greg McKenzie'. This was too much for him to take in at once, so went to the pub over the road. He walked through the front door, he strolled to the bar. "Well done, how did you take a bloke of that size?" Then another from behind him said "Yeh how did you do it?". Everyone was listening to his story in the pub. He was just about to leave, when five blokes came up to him. "Hey mate! Would you like to come to the Arsenal verse's Manchester United with us?"

"Yeh, I'd love to you, sure"

"Yeh you seem to be an alright guy, why have you never spoken to us before."

"I dun no."

"Great then we'll pick you up then at about seven O'clock tonight, alright. We'll be off then, see ya mate."

"Brill!"
