Liturgical Dance

Liturgical dance is one of the purest forms of dance because of the movement and the spiritual expressions of worship. This type of dance “expresses faith through body movement.”The event I attended was related to the art of dance and music. The name of the event was called “Praise Fest” and the dance troupe was a group called The Liberated Movers. It was held in a church located in New Orleans, Louisiana named My Redeemer Missionary Baptist Church. It was a cozy little church.

It had pews on both sides, with an isle in the middle that led to the pulpit where a choir stood. The church was dimly lit with a spotlight on a male bearing a large cross on his back and another spotlight shining on four female dancers. The female dancers were wearing a long-sleeve floor-length flowy gowns. The male dancer was wearing urban wear. The choir was singing gospel songs as the dancers acted out the lyrics of the song through dance.

The setting of the performance was a church. The gowns they were wearing was like choir gown. The loose-fittinggownshad across stitched on the front. The gestures they were making in their dance performance mimicked someone praying. The various styles of art in this performance are related to the African American culture. The form of dancing they were doing was hip hop and jazz. The music that was sung was gospel music. Gospel music and praise dance are deeply rooted in African American culture and tradition. I enjoyed this performance. It was an emotional event. It was beautiful how the lyrics of the songs were elevated through dance. The choreographed dance added a strong visual element to the event and its purpose.
