The story is set in the early 1900’s in the town of Doodle’s birth, in the southern part of the United States. Doodle is born with a heart condition and is not expected to live. His mother and father are devastated, but his brother, who is six years old at the time, is determined to make Doodle live. He does everything he can think of to make Doodle live, including teaching him how to walk and run. Finally, Doodle learns to walk and run on his own, and the family is overjoyed. However, Doodle’s heart condition is still not cured, and he dies at the age of six.
