“Monster” is a novel by Walter Dean Myers. It tells the story of Steve Harmon, a sixteen-year-old African American who is on trial for his role in a robbery in which a man was killed. The novel is written in the form of a screenplay, with Steve’s journal entries interspersed throughout.
Steve is a good student and aspiring filmmaker. He comes from a supportive family, but his life is changed forever when he is arrested and charged with felony murder. In jail, he befriends Bobo, another inmate, and they help each other to survive the harsh conditions.
The trial is a media circus, and Steve is portrayed as a monster in the press. He is found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. In prison, he continues to make films and finds some measure of redemption.
