The play is set in the summer of 1912 at the Tyrones’ country home in Connecticut. The family is consisting of the father, James Tyrone, a successful actor; his wife, Mary, a former actress; and their two sons, Jamie, a failed actor, and Edmund, who is ill with tuberculosis.
The play focuses on the family’s relationships and how they deal with their personal demons. As the play progresses, the family’s dysfunction becomes more and more apparent.
The play ends with Edmund’s death.
