James Baxter was born in New Zealand in 1927. He is a writer and poet, best known for his work in the Māori language. Baxter was educated at the University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington. He has worked as a teacher, farmer, and journalist. Baxter’s first poetry collection, Horse, was published in 1954. He has since published more than 20 books of poetry, prose, and drama. His work has been translated into several languages, including Māori, English, French, and German. Baxter was awarded the New Zealand Book Award for Poetry in 1993, and the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2001.
Although James Baxter’s novels are not widely read today, he was an important author in his time. His work was praised by critics and he was popular with readers. His novels offer a glimpse into the life of a small town in the early twentieth century.
