Charles Van Doren was an American author, editor, and lecturer who was best known for his involvement in the quiz show scandal of the 1950s. He was born in New York City in 1926 and graduated from Columbia University in 1947. After working as a journalist and editor, he became a regular panelist on the television quiz show Twenty-One in 1956. He won more than $100,000 in prize money before he was exposed as having been given the answers to the questions in advance. Van Doren was called to testify before the United States Senate in 1959 and admitted to cheating on the show. He was subsequently fired from his job at Columbia University and his reputation was tarnished. He later wrote a memoir about his experience, entitled A Matter of Honor (1974). Van Doren died in 2019 at the age of 93.
