“Learning Skills of the 21st Century”

3 Concepts I have learned

Summary

In a seminar entitled: “Learning Skills of the 21st century” presented by Carla Fischer, a Full Sail University staff member, several aspects of the human being such as our “long” and “short term” memory banks, sensory inputs, what it means to exercise effective reading strategies , partake in active studying skills (techniques), note taking strategies (with specific of the proper usage of Mnemonic devices) and lastly new technologies aimed at helping students share their academic and other scholarly notes, were all addressed and subsequently highlighted during the seminar.

In the seminar I learned, that various types of information enters one’s long term memory bank with ongoing repetition which is also called the “rehearsal path”. During the presentation, I have learned that this “ongoing repetition” must to be completed in order for any specific information to enter an individual’s long term memory and stay there. This method is also why making activities “hands on” and by means of sharing and allowing individuals (specifically students) to partake in their own unique learning experiences, creates “triggers” with regards to the long term memory (practice makes perfect is the very exercising of the human’s rehearsal path (brain activity is no different).

In addition, while reviewing this presentation, I have learned more about “effective reading” skills, which encompasses everything from phonics instruction, to the correct deciphering of context clues, and ongoing development as well as utilization of reading comprehension. I also can now identify the difference between “Active- Studying”, which involves mentally and at times, physically engaging within one’s work (and the active learning process).

Furthermore, because of this seminar, I can now spot noteworthy examples of “active studying” taken directly from the seminar include techniques such as, “creating study groups, utilizing flashcards, board-games, podcasts, song & rap writings, flow charts, stories, textual outlines, “hands on” crafts, map creation, various drawing activities, and replacing text with pictures, in addition to , successful note taking strategies.

During Miss Fischer’s seminar, I have also learned to only focus on “key words” during my instructor’s presentations as well as lectures when it comes to successful note taking. This means that, while taking notes for class, I will give mention in my study notes to key dates, the noteworthy names of places, countries and people in specific (historical) time periods. Furthermore, I also learned that, I should always carry a recording device in class, this way I can tape the lecture and listen back to it at a later time (while doing work). Lastly, I have learned about the importance of paraphrasing, mapping concepts, decreasing the use of filler words (such as articles, pronouns, and specific unworthy adjectives).
