In 1970, Dr. Robert Greenleaf wrote an essay called “The Servant as leader, “and it focused on the areas of ethics and ethical leadership. Greenleaf described that a leader is a person who chooses first to be a servant (follower). Dr. Greenleaf theory is that “Army leaders who are themselves servant leaders” (NCO Journal, 2013). Meaning that leadership and followership go hand and hand. As a Soldier it is important to know the concept of leadership and followership. One in which the two concepts are linked.
Before a Soldier can be an effective leader they must know how to follow then it will be effortless for them to lead.
According to (FM) 6-22, Army leadership is “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization”. Non commissioned officers must exercise and be in the know regarding their emotions and how their emotional competence influences the way he leads and impacts their Soldiers.
Leaders must lead, and do it well enough to retain actual leadership. As a servant leader there is a primary importance that focuses on the organizations Soldiers as its principles concern, and other concerns are minor.
In contrast, followership is the capacity and willingness to follow a leader. It is stated “By understanding dynamic followership, military organizations can treat followership like a discipline and improve leader-follower cultures. Through education, soldiers and officers can learn how to be effective and courageous followers as well as good leaders, potentially preventing future unethical decisions” (Lt.
Col. Paul Berg, 2014). Followership is nothing more but being an effective follower and finding out what type of followers the NCO has. For example, there are alienated followers, and sheep followers which both are considered passive followers, and then there is effective followers, and yes people and they are on the active side. Survivors are also part of the diagram and it is placed in the center and they can either be dependent, and an uncritical thinker or independent and a critical thinker. The goal of it all is to find out who is who.
In conclusion, as a Soldier it is important to know the concept of leadership and followership. Since, the two go hand and hand NCO’s can’t be effective leaders without knowing how to lead and follow. ADP 6-22, describes leadership and followership framework by stating that “Effective organizations depend on the competence of respectful leaders and loyal followers, and learning to be a good leader also needs to be associated with learning to be a good follower; learning to be a good leader also needs to be associated with learning to be loyalty, subordination, respect for superiors, and even when and how to lodge candid disagreement” (ADP 6-22, 2014). In compliance with leadership and followership Soldiers just need to live by the Army values and all will fall in place.
