Kinesthetic Learning: Embracing Movement for Academic Success

Reaction; Kinesthetic, a Learning Style.

The kinesthetic learning style is the most frequently used learning method among male students not only in the United States but all over the world. Did you know that 9% of the nursing student population has multimodal learning preferences and only 23% have kinesthetic learning styles? (Ibrahim and Hussein, 3). Kinesthetic learning, sometimes referred to as tactile learning, uses movement and physical activity to aid in the processing and retention of knowledge. As for me I usually learn best through experiments or simulations.

I think studying entails active participation in the material.

To improve my learning experience, it is critical to incorporate physical activities such as role-playing, practical experiments, and taking notes. I also benefit from visual aids such as diagrams, flow charts, and pictures, which help to reinforce the information in my mind.

I prefer to learn by doing, therefore, I benefit more from participating in class discussions and practical activities rather than just reading and memorizing. As Sivilotti and Pike state, “KLAs promote student interactivity and improve student learning by engaging a fundamental and ubiquitous learning style” (p.5).

I benefit from being an active learner who can participate in group projects or sports.

I strongly believe that understanding my learning style, particularly the kinesthetic learning style, is critical for my academic success. By understanding my personal style I can improve my understanding and retention of material by incorporating more physical activities, hands-on experiments, and interactive experiences. To promote academic success, educators should strive to make learning more accessible to all students, regardless of their learning style.
