Everyone has been embarrassed at one time or another. Embarrassing situations are painful and sometimes hard to forget. But when it is successfully overcome, the whole experience becomes amusing moments in our lives, making us stronger and bolder. I have gone through a few embarrassing situations during my freshman year at high school. I was embarrassed when I brought the wrong book to the class, when I had to give an impromptu speech during the school assembly, and when I accidentally used the wrong toilet at school.
The first incident happened during my math class.
Our teacher had given us several pages of trigonometry homework to do the previous day. Being in love with mathematics and in an attempt to impress my teacher, I had finished it all. When the teacher asked who all had done their homework, my hands were the only ones that went up and a proud smile swept across my face. The teacher told to give me a round of applause for my hard work and walked towards me to see my homework.
I immediately took the book from my bag and handed it to her. She opened my book and looked, her happiness turned into surprise and then into a giggle. She told me that I handed her my French book. I was shocked and I frantically searched my bag for my math book. And then it hit me like a truck, the fact that I swapped my books because both looked identical with brown covers.
The whole class figured out what had happened and burst out laughing, my proud moment destroyed.
The next incident was during the school assembly. Our school chess team had won the regional chess competition and being the captain of the team, I was called unexpectedly onto the stage to give a small speech regarding our success. I was unprepared and stood speechless in front of hundreds of students. I was embarrassed but I was able to quickly overcome the fear and deliver a good speech.
In addition to these two incidents, there was another, more embarrassing incident that happened to me. It was during the school recess. The minute the bell rang for recess, I rushed to the toilet because I had been controlling nature’s call since class started. Without realizing, I rushed to the girl’s toilet which was placed right next to the boy’s toilet. After a few minutes, when I came out of my cubicle, I saw a few girls standing outside giggling. I realized to my horrors that I was in the girl’s toilet and I ran away. No tomato could have matched the color of my face at this point.
All these incidents were an eye-opening experience for me. As Sedaris says in his hilarious essay-“Me Talk Pretty One Day”- “The world opened up, and it was with great joy that I responded….”(Sedaris 136). Embarrassing situations are sometimes inevitable but what matters is our perseverance. Similar to Sedaris’s enlightenment from embarrassing situations in his French class, I too was able to overcome my fears and learned to have a positive attitude in life.
