A master’s degree used to be the ticket to success when it came to one’s future, but now being successful can be achieved by the touch of one’s fingertips. The chances are nowadays that finding all the same types of classes and unique ways of learning have been made simple online. There is no degree for such things as becoming a consultant, real estate broker, air traffic controller, technical writer, and much more. Even though it may not seem to be true, there are plenty of jobs that pay 6 figures just after a few years without having that 4-year degree.
In this essay, I will be discussing the many reasons why it may not even be necessary to get a degree to be successful in one’s future.
To start with, college can be important for most people if they’re unsure about the future, but I believe that it is possible to be successful in the future without it.
Student debt can be the one to crush your dreams like an avalanche because even after college being successful and making wages, students will continue to pay back debt. “Over 44.2 million Americans have student debt. According to research from Student Loan Hero, the delinquency rate is 11.2% and the average monthly student loan payment for borrowers 20-30 is $351” (7 Reasons you don’t need a college degree, 2017). Without that loan payment, one could be investing money into personal attributes such as a business. Even though not attending college and achieving a degree is unnecessary, it is helpful.
“Through 2020, there will be 51 million job openings in the U.S. and 35% of them require a bachelor’s degree” (7 Reasons you don’t need a college degree, 2017). “Even when a job doesn’t 91% of jobs will go to those that do have a bachelor’s degree” (Can You Succeed Without College, 2018). The degree a student will receive could be useless by the time they graduate. There is so much time and effort put into a degree that might not even be put to good use after finishing college. It is like gambling, there is always a risk. Many trends such as technology or business trends will go out of style and when in school, we are reading old textbooks that are at least 4 years behind the times.
Another key to determining success is “grit”. Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals. “This isn’t learned from textbooks and taking tests, but through real-world struggles” (7 Reasons you don’t need a college degree, 2017). This comes from facing challenges and making things work even without a plan. Even though being out in the real world and facing struggles on its own may seem like the way to go, one should still be learning simultaneously and getting an education. Putting in the work for a degree is also helping out in the real world. Having a degree may seem useless, but they are designed for us to be able to have a holistic experience and not just for the reputation.
When it comes down to it, one can achieve their goals and successes without a typical four-year college education. Although it does seem difficult, a person is capable to achieve this just as well as you would a degree. No matter what you choose to do, it is going to take a lot of time and effort. To be successful in achieving personal goals, one must aim for the stars by putting the work in, even to remotely be successful and see satisfying results.
