(7) And perhaps the strangest of all belongs to the University of California at Santa Cruz. Sometimes in the evenings, we would sit out in front of the ranch house near the cattle guards and play music. The young wolverillos would gather across the ditch and listen attentively. They especially liked to hear songs by Hank Williams, to which they would attempt to sing along by making little gurgling sounds deep in their throats.
Occasionally, they would click their teeth if we played something with a beat to it.
In winter the warehouse is cold and damp. There is no heat. The large steel doors that line the warehouse walls stay open most of the day. In the cold months, wind, rain, and snow blow across the floor. In the summer the warehouse becomes an oven. Dust and sand from the runways mix with the toxic fumes of fork lifts, leaving a dry, stale taste in your mouth. The high windows above the doors are covered with a thick, black dirt that kills the sun. The men work in shadows with the constant roar of jet engines blowing dangerously in their ears.
Radios have been stolen from four cars in our parking garage this month. Each time, the thieves have managed to get by the parking garage security with radios in hand, even though they do not have a parking garage identification card, which people must show as they enter and exit the garage. Yet each time, the security officers say they have seen nothing
unusual.
