Have you ever thought about how advertisers manipulate products to teens? With all the technology teens are exposed to, advertisers get their chance to promote their products to teens. As well as paying celebrities, with teens audiences, to promote products through the internet.
Ads targeted to teens are very effective because, advertisers constantly recruit teens to promote products through social media—influencing more teens to buy the product, teens are the largest group that uses social media on their wireless devices, where most ads pop up, and a large majority of teens are very willing to spend an abundance amount of money to be “cool” or for “clout”.
The first way that advertising to teens is effective is because advertisers constantly recruit teens to promote products through social media—influencing more teens to buy the product.
To illustrate, Common Sense Media, a leading independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology, explains how “Many brands encourage teens to broadcast their interactions with brands (such as uploading pics of themselves with a particular purse, drink, or outfit).”
This quote explains how teens show off the brands that they buy to encourage other people to buy, which is what the companies mainly want.
As a result, teens uploading pictures in companies clothing causes more kids to buy the product, making companies effective. The second reason why advertisers are effective is because, teens are the largest group that uses social media on their wireless devices, where most ads pop up.
For example, The marketing eye, a business development agency and a marketing technology business, points out how “A more effective method of maintaining interest in your business in the long term is taking the time to update your status or tweet a message about any new products or business activity.” Companies now are posting things and updating about new products to have teens buy these products.
In this way, companies are effective to teens mainly through social media.
The final reason why advertising to teens is effective is because, a large majority of teens are very willing to spend an abundance amount of money to be “cool” or for “clout”. According to, Common Sense Media, a leading independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology, talks about how “ Brands appealing to teens take advantage of their particular vulnerabilities: the desire to fit in, to be perceived as attractive, and to not be a huge dork.
Teens are extremely attuned to their place in the peer hierarchy, and advertising acts as a kind of "super peer" in guiding them toward what's cool and what's acceptable. Both teen boys and girls are highly susceptible to messages around body image, and marketers use this to their advantage. “ This quote means that now teens are highly influenced by peers and will buy things that with make them “cool”. Also marketers use this to their advantage by having teens post their product on social media to encourage more teens to buy the product. Therefore, peer pressure from other teens encouraging other teens to buy their product makes advertisers more effective.
Aimed ads at teenage audiences are sufficient considering, advertisers get teens to encourage other teens to buy their product, most ads show up where a lot of teens spend most of their time, on the internet, and many teens would spend an abundance of money to be cool. With teens having all this technology it makes it easier to advertise to them, affecting teens spending choices.
Overall, advertisers are getting into teens heads with the idea of being “cool” which I believe is negatively affecting the way teens spend money and will eventually affect how teens act. Teens should be able to live life without thinking they have to be “cool” which the media is making all of these products seem.
