“Toys don’t last forever,” Andy’s mother says in Toy Story 2. This phrase is defining to the whole plot and message of the film. In this sequel to Toy Story (1995), toys confront the prospects of being abandoned by their owner, struggle to survive despite the unfavorable circumstances, and finally find a new meaning in their life through enhanced friendship and belief that together they will be able to overcome any difficulties. The rhetorical appeals in Toy Story 2 serve to convey the director’s message of the need to retain fundamental human and family values in the wake of crises, upheavals, and other challenges of the capitalistic reality.
