Multiple intelligences is a theory developed by Howard Gardner in 1983 that suggests that traditional concepts of intelligence based on IQ are too narrow. According to the theory, there are multiple intelligences that encompass a wider range of abilities, including linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalistic intelligences. Each individual has unique strengths and weaknesses across these intelligences, and education should be designed to appeal to these strengths and not just focus on an individual’s IQ score. The concept of multiple intelligences has gained widespread acceptance in education, helping teachers to tailor methods to better suit each student’s individual learning style.
