Mahatma Gandhi was a prominent figure in Indian history and a leader in the Indian independence movement against British rule. Born in 1869 in Porbandar, India, Gandhi was educated in London and later became a lawyer in South Africa. He developed his philosophy of nonviolent resistance or satyagraha, which he implemented in various protests and campaigns for civil rights and Indian independence. His leadership and influence led to the Indian Independence Act of 1947, which granted India its independence from British rule. Gandhi is remembered as a symbol of peace and justice, and his legacy continues to inspire people around the world. He was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu nationalist.
