Date: 30th January 2013
Batch No: 1
Objective: To study a wetland ecosystem and observe the flora and fauna around Manipal.
Coordinates: 13°20'11"N 74°47'36"E
The second field trip for Batch No: 1 on 30.01.2013 was to Arbi Waterfalls, a picturesque natural site located in the Dasrath Nagar region. Our journey began with a bus ride that brought us to the top of the plateau of Dasrath Nagar. From there, we embarked on a trek down the steep slope of the plateau to reach the fields.
During our descent, we encountered a swift and crystal-clear stream of water.
The water was refreshingly cold as we crossed it. We walked along dykes, which marked the boundaries of adjacent fields and resembled a no-man's land made of mud.
Adjacent to a farmer's house, which was described to be over a hundred years old, we found a well and a unique temple. This temple was special as it was surrounded by big trees, and people prayed to Lord Vishnu in his cobra incarnation.
We were also informed that the local people worshiped 'Nagaraj'. Our exploration led us through numerous bamboo barricades as we ventured into the lush paddy fields, where greenery stretched as far as the eye could see.
The fields were densely packed with large trees, creating a natural canopy. After examining the surrounding nature, we retraced our steps and headed towards the falls using the same route we had entered. After a short trek, we successfully crossed the stream and reached a small road leading to the foothills of the falls.
To reach the top, we had to navigate slippery rocks and thorny bushes.
Along the way, we observed natural springs on the ground from which pure and cold water oozed out. As we ascended, we encountered small valleys filled with bushes and slippery rocks. Algae had covered the sharp edges and corners of the rocks, making them even more slippery. Eventually, we reached the top of the falls, landing on a barren field surrounded by houses. We captured memorable moments with photographs before returning to our bus.
The southern side of Manipal, particularly the Dasrath Nagar area, boasts a rich variety of flora and fauna. The region is teeming with bird species, butterflies, insects, snakes, cattle, and other wildlife. The primary tree species in the area include 'Acacia' and 'Cashew.'
The local farmers face several challenges, and to address them, the following solutions can be considered:
Arbi Waterfalls, a recently discovered natural gem near Manipal Lake, comes to life during the monsoon season, typically from August to November. It has gained popularity among visitors, including Manipal University (MU) students. However, the increased footfall has led to pollution in the area. Local residents have raised concerns about littering, with visitors leaving plastic bottles, chip wrappers, and garbage near the waterfall. It is imperative that steps are taken to preserve and protect this beautiful natural wonder for future generations.
