Feminism in the Rise of Television

During the 1960s and 70s in television there was a rise in feminism and racism. The shows that I would be comparing would be Thats 70s show and BeWitched. In the show “Thats 70 show” was a sitcom that mostly described feminism and racism. During the 70s there was a interesting history in the third wave feminism and are important beliefs and issues that are still going on in today's time. In some of the episodes there is an episode where Jackie and Kelso told Dona “ugly girls only go to college because they cant get modeling contracts” and this part of the 70s in reflects on two things being pretty and professionally or the domestic real.

This idea that women needed the opportunity to be happy outside of the home was made by Betty Friedan in her famous book “The Feminine Mystique,” which explains the sadness in women who chose to stay home and are consider the second wave of feminism.

In today's generation people still believe that women should stay home. There is still issues regarding women in the workforce that are still present such as equal pay, child care, birth control etc. In Betty Friedan's book she quotes “Who knows what women can be when they are finally free to become themselves? Who knows what women's intelligence will contribute when it can be nourished without denying love?” A perfect example would be When dona responds to Michael “ No, college is for women who don't want to be stuck carrying a morons child”

When it comes to racism Thats 70 show represent racism mostly in the character named Fez who portrayed as a latino man who is constantly laughed at .
