2019Entrepreneurial Opportunities to bring Reforms in Indian Education ScenarioEntrepreneurship Assignment SUBMITTED BY:-YUKTI BAWEJA (1466)TABLE OF CONTENTSINTRODUCTIONPRESENT SCENARIO OF INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEMIDEAL SCENARIO FOR EDUCATION SYSTEMGAPS IDENTIFIEDENTREPRENEURIAL INITIATIVESCONCLUSIONBIBLIOGRAPHYINTRODUCTIONThe history of Indian education system has its roots where they followed Gurukul system in which the students are supposed to study at their guru's (teacher) house until the teacher felt that he/she has imparted all the necessary knowledge like Sanskrit to Mathematics to Metaphysics. This system included more interaction with nature. However, this system was influenced by British era which was more classroom oriented and the curriculum confined subjects such as Mathematics, Science, and etc. This modern education system led to the formation of impersonal relationships with the teachers and the students and teachings was only confined to classrooms.Currently, Education system in India includes both public and private school with the approximate ratio of 7:5. Free and compulsory education has now become the fundamental right for children between 6-14 years of age as per the Indian Constitution.
Most of the boards in India follow the 10+2+3 pattern of education in which first 10 years are further divided into primary education for 4 years and higher education for 6 years. In recent times, the Government of India have made several announcements to improve the condition of Indian education system.
The announcements are: - (a) To increase expenditure on education to approximately 6% of GDP. (b) To impose an education cess over all central government taxes. (c) To make right to education a fundamental right for all children in the age group 6"14 years.
(d) To introduce educational programmes such as Sarva Siksha Abhiyan.PRESENT SCENARIO OF INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEMAs we know Education is the process facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits. Now the question is does Indian education system comply with this definition? The answer to this is big NO. Nowadays, the primary objective of school education system is not targeting towards developing good character, enabling students to actively apply their minds nut is confined to the process of completing the SYLLABUS within the allotted time and conducting the prescribed number of tests. Consequently, the aptitude of a student is judged on the basis of marks scored, avoiding the aspect of overall development of a student. The student is supposed to memorize the prescribed lessons and vomit in the exam answer sheets filling up the pages. They are trained to score good marks. In most of the school's schedule the time allotted for sports activities is very much negligible and even the sports classes are also occupied bt the subject teachers in order to complete their course on time. The students are carrying huge pressure on their shoulders of scoring good marks as it is considered as SUCCESSFUL FUTURE. Funny thing is that from the colonial times only a few changes have been made. The Britishers introduced education systems in India to create clerks and civil servants, and we have not deviated much from that pattern till today. Students now routinely score 90% marks so and even then these students with 90(+) % find it difficult to take admissions into the colleges of their choice. As per Teach for India statistics, "4% of our children never start school. 58% don't complete primary schools. And 90% don't complete school". These numbers are shocking from almost any standpoint. The Indian Government passed the Right to Education Legislation in 2009 at a time when close to 8 million children were out of school. For those who do attend school, the problems are no less. Unfortunately, the ideal crammers are rewarded in the current system .The knowledge is forgotten after every terminal exams and the students end up focussing on cramming information.IDEAL SCENARIO FOR EDUCATION SYSTEMWe need to have a system of education which focuses on practical knowledge and eradicate the practice of spoon feeding. This would widen the prospective of the students, encourage out of the box thinking, and enhance innovation and creativity. An education system should be with no ability streaming, no school ranking, no school inspection, high learning outcomes and high quality teachers. Also, there must be societal trust in the work of educators, and the highest respect for learning. An ideal education system must comply with following attributes:-Right teacher for right subject- This ensures quality teachers which would ultimately result in quality education system. Example -Finland's teachers are recruited from among the top 10% of each cohort. No streaming- Early streaming is not logical because that is too early to judge individual capabilities at the age of 11or12 years. No perfect curriculum system- School should be free to design their own curriculum under a core curriculum.Balanced- The education system should maintain equal balance between academic knowledge as well as extra curriculum.Question based- The system must encourage research and avoid spoon feedings that encourages research, original thinking and innovations.Perspective- Society must give higher respect to learning and experience as compared to grades and certificates.GAPSAfter comparing the present scenario with ideal scenario we come across several loopholes in our education system. Memorising over originality is the fundamental flaw in our education system. Following are the gaps in our education system-Infrastructure- Lack of disabled friendly schools, clean and adequate drinking water, separate toilets for girls and boys and playgrounds, lack of smart classrooms that can provide interactive and high quality learning at a level playing field across the country.Affordability- There is a massive deficit of access to high-quality education both at the primary & high school level. The cost of educating one of the world's greatest populations has been increasing at a steady pace.Education Technology-India needs to invest in technological infrastructure that will make access to knowledge easier than ever. The tools such as Smartphone, tablets and computers with high speed internet connection can be used.Classroom size does not fit all- Indian education system work on the presumption that if something is good for one student, it is good for all students. Some students may learn faster, some are comparatively slow. Some people are visual learners, others are auditory learners, and rest from experience. Reservation System- This is not a long "term solution for making education universally available. There is no reservation in online education. Applicants are admitted on the basis of the reservation of various castes instead of the aptitude of student.Private Capital must be Encouraged- The government cannot afford to provide education to huge population. Even the government did not have enough money to spend on opening new schools and universities, forget about investing in technology and innovation related to the education system.Deregulating Educational institutes as not-for profit organisation- This increases black money and discouraged entrepreneurs and innovators initiatives.Quality Teachers- Well trained and good instructor must be recruited for the job of teacher because poor quality teaching in the schools have encouraged coaching industry.ENTERPRENEURAL INTIATIVESAfter identifying gaps we must suggest ways to overcome them through entrepreneurial initiatives. Following are the initiatives that would help to reduce or remove the gaps in our education system:-There must be a college/school's App which provides with a platform for discussion, problem solving portal, personalised teaching from their seniors and teachers whenever they find any difficulty, online courses, career counselling, real stories of pass outs, feedback, conducting collaborative research projects, provide update about the events, support payment portals.Focus on gaps- Personalised teaching Research learning Counselling and discussions Technological hindrances Discourages coaching industriesTeacher training universities can be launched which would provide workshops to the teachers, innovative and different teaching methods and train the senior teachers according to various changes taking place in the education system.Focus on gaps- quality teaching Parents training institutions can also be launched in which the parents needs to attend the workshops on weekly or monthly basis in which they must be guided with the changing scenario of education system, how to support their children under pressurised situation, ways to counsel their child time to time, update them about new opportunities available for their child's career, explaining them the need to maintain balance between academics and extra curriculum activities.Focus on gaps- Typical prospective of parents as well as society Trust in work of educatorsAll such initiatives will remove the miscommunication between student and teacher, teacher and parents, parents and their children. This improvement in relationship between these three parties who plays vital role in the education scenario will encourage smooth functioning of education system because we know that effective communication is one of the most essential elements for quality education.CONCLUSIONEducation is the most important thing for any country to develop and prosper. Education affects the character and intelligence of individuals. It also provides the talent and motivation to every person. It is clear that there are gaps in the education system of India which can be removed through collaborative efforts of system as well as Entrepreneurial initiatives in education that is vital to bring originality, reduce cramming and memorising and enhancing digital learning.Apart from formal procedures in education system, it is necessary to encourage entrepreneurship in schools and colleges. The spirit of creativity and research learning has been lost in generations of rote learning. Only when teachers and the system alike encourage innovation, will we see more progress in the education industry.BIBLIOGRAPHYAvati Aditi, The Gap in Indian Education System and How can Technology Help? < 13, 2017Thakkar Amrita, The Essential Guide to Entrepreneurs in Indian Education 2, 2018Nagaraj S, Current Scenario of Indian Education System 8, 2016
