Bangladesh is a developing country, suffers from some evil cultures and superstitions. Dowry system is one of the worst evil cultures in this society that deviates social progress and prosperity day by day. It has been an ancient and widespread practice. The practice of the payment of dowry during marriage has developed in the society mainly in the 1970s. This bad culture is found and practiced more or less in all communities of the country. A dowry is a gift of money or valuables given by the bride's family to the groom and the newly formed household at the time of their marriage.
According to Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000, 'The claim of money, luxury goods or various other terms as dowry on the condition of the marriage being settled by the husband as a marriage bet.' The definition of dowry is stated in the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1980, section 2 is 'From one party to the other in marriage any property or valuation agreed to be given, either directly or indirectly, by the parents of one party to the marriage or by any other person to the other party or to any other person, either before or after the marriage or at any time during the marriage of such parties.' It is the most common unpleasant custom.
It creates many problems.
It is against the success of our country.
In solvent families, the family of the groom expects that the parents of the bride will willingly give huge amount of gifts to the new couple with expensive goods which they can show off as a symbol of their prestige and wealth.
It is a much unexpected situation for the bride's family members.
They are to collect a huge amount of money for their daughter's or sister's marriage. Often the parents of the daughter are willing to provide large sum of money and expensive goods to make the future of their daughter a pleasant and secure one. Bride's family have to lose many things and face many problems for this dowry system. Sometimes, they are to borrow money on exorbitant rate of interest, sell their lands, furniture, ornaments and even their own house to collect the money and spend rest of their life in great misery. In all cases the lives of the young brides are at stake. They have to live in a hostile environment where they become the victims of physical, social, mental and psychological torture.
