I had the pleasure of interviewing my cosmetologist and cousin, Deborah Coleman of Deb’s Gifted Hands. Debbie as she likes to be called has been my children’s hair stylist and mine for five years, and we truly love her and her services. The owner and operator of Deb’s Gifted Hands graduated from Carolina Beauty College in 2003 and became a licensed cosmetologist February 13, 2007. She went on to further her education at the American InterContinental University, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in 2017 and her master’s degree in 2018, both in Business Administration.
All of these accomplishments were done while she was a single parent of three beautiful children.
After working as a stylist for Steele Sophisticated for five years, Debbie was able to buy the salon and see her childhood dream of being a cosmetologist and salon owner come true. On September 1, 2017, Deb’s Gifted Hands was created. Debbie quickly renovated, changed the business name to a name that she has had licensed for eight years and immediately hired staff.
Her four member staff consists of licensed cosmetologist: Geri, who was working at the previous salon with Debbie, Savannah, a stylist recommended by her cousin and through direct hire Ms. Sonya and Jae. All five stylists have their own chairs with their own clientele that keeps them working seven days a week.
Branding her business with praying hands has brought the salon much success. Advertising through the internet from sites like LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook has also helped the business thrive.
Debbie is a very religious and spiritual woman, which makes the salons atmosphere, bring you a sense of peace and relaxation. Debbie’s spiritual vibe is what makes her business stand out from others, as well as giving back to her community through back to school drives with free hairstyles and discounts for nursing home clientele. Owning her own salon has made it possible for her to set her own schedule and focus more on her family and church. Becoming an entrepreneur has come with more bills, but the financial gain has offset the influx of bills. In the near future Debbie would love to expand her business with more salons and her own-patented line of shampoos and conditioners. Debbie says in order to own your own business one must be patient, do your research, fast, pray, and then do the work.
As a client of Debbie’s for the past five years, I have witnessed her dreams come true with a lot of hard work and determination. I have learned how to be a self-motivator through Debbie’s strength and courage while opening her salon, especially when challenges came her way throughout the process. I love how the salon gives back to the community and helps nursing home patients. Nursing home patients can be overlooked because of age and lack of family support, this loving gesture from her is indicative of the kind of person Debbie really is. Through business plans, industry and market research, Deb’s Gifted Hands shows how to make each step count in becoming an entrepreneur. Through Debbie’s vision, she seized an opportunity that would not only help her, but help her staff and clientele as well. Being an entrepreneur is all about being able to express yourself through your work and skill while being satisfied in knowing that it all belongs to you. Debbie’s story shows that one should never give up on his or her dreams.
