Co-curricular activities, earlier known as extracurricular activities, are components of the non-academic curriculum that help develop various facets of personality in children and students. For all-round development of the child, emotional, physical, spiritual, and moral development is necessary and can be complemented and supplemented by co-curricular activities. Co-curricular activities are defined as activities that enable students to supplement and complement their curricular activities. They are an essential part of educational institutions to develop students’ personalities and strengthen classroom learning. These activities are organized after school hours and examples of co-curricular activities include sports, musical activities, debates, art, camping, marching, clubs, societies, and uniform units.
The first advantage of extracurricular activities is that they can develop good moral values and discipline among students.
Activities such as participation in games, debates, music, dramas, and speeches can help students express themselves freely and develop a spirit of healthy competition.
These activities guide students on how to organize and present an activity, how to develop skills, and how to cooperate and coordinate in different situations, all of which help in leadership qualities.
Additionally, they also help students become more disciplined.
For example, students must attend various practices, training sessions, and club meetings punctually, and if they are late, they are usually reprimanded.
They soon realize that obeying orders is important. Moreover, if students participate in outdoor activities organized by any club, such as camping and marching, they have to follow strict rules, especially those elected as captain, leaders, secretaries, and committee members.
Secondly, co-curricular activities can also improve our health.
When we exercise, we can burn extra fat in our body that can be harmful to our health.
Furthermore, exercise regulates blood flow to the brain. This process is vital because blood carries oxygen that is needed by the brain to work efficiently. Thus, it can reduce sleepiness because the brain gets oxygen.
