Charity is God’s Saving Hand

Categories: Death penalty

He reaches out in our time of need. In the case of the quote, charity is reaching out to a traveler who has been wounded or attacked. The oil, God’s saving power in the name of charity, is healing the wounds of the traveler. I believe that Frederic Ozanam is emphasizing our duty as Christians to be Samaritans. Samaritans are people who give without seeking anything in return, which is hard to do now in our material world. Samaritans reach out and help a person whether a stranger in passing, a friend, or even a foe.

In my case, a Samaritan is someone who holds a door for a mere stranger, a person who gives their shoulder for their friend to cry on, or even simply uses her smile to brighten up this dark world of hatred, anger, and injustice. The quote, mentions justice’s role in the attack. Justice is supposed to prevent the attack. To me, it means it is supposed to prevent the next one, and the next one after that.

Justice is not solely for the traveler who was recently injured but also for those who might be injured after him. For example, the Black Lives Matter Movement are Samaritans who get justice for the wounded or sadly African Americans that have wrongly been persecuted. They are also a voice that hopes to prevent another attack. Samaritans are the light in a dark world.

A culture is a group of individuals who have shared beliefs. It is more than that.

A culture is a way of life. It can play a huge role in how a person sees themselves, or who they believe they are supposed to be. Many cultures have beliefs and experiences that are shared from generation to generation. As these beliefs and experiences are passed down, narratives start to form. Individuals get to create stories that reveal their collective selves. They reveal their inner truths, beliefs, and hopes. These truths, beliefs, and hopes can reveal values that a specific culture stands by, and lives by. Without them, the culture would not be what it is today or what it will be tomorrow because every culture evolves, and every culture changes somehow. The thing that doesn’t change, however, is its embedded values and beliefs that stem from past experiences. Our past experiences can be revealed and shared through these narratives. Without these narratives, the past can be forgotten, or its truth can be mistakenly altered. A culture and its people could be mistakenly guided by false truths, beliefs, and hopes, simply due to a false narrative or no narrative at all. Overall, people and cultures need to create narratives from their experiences to learn, grow, and help themselves and others become their true selves fostered from true beliefs.

The death penalty is a complex issue in today’s society. It violates everything I believe in, everything Christianity calls for. As human beings crafted by God, we must value and protect all of his creation, including those who seem undeserving of it. The causes of the death penalty can be found in our social environment. Our social environment created the death penalty and is held up by an imperfect system. It is the breeding ground for racism and discrimination that many of the offenders face in their cases. Some people believe that the laws, amendments, the habeas corpus, the jury, and even the Supreme Court can fully protect an individual under the full extent of the law. I do not believe so. It has been found in many cases that the wealthy and privileged escape the effects of the death penalty while the unprivileged and poor do not.

To systematically solve this issue, we first must educate the public by using real credible sources like statistics, reports, figures, and trends to ultimately advocate and campaign to end the death penalty. We then must hold account other countries that support the death penalty, making a stance that is in the way of evolving principles. We must be healers like Christ, not people who feel as though we have the right to take another’s life. I will leave you with one question, What if they were not guilty of the crime they were accused of?”
