Cause and Effect Essay (Smoking Cigarettes)

About this essay

Cigarettes the poison of humanity, killing thousands every year, children smoking at the age of 12 , the bad health of smokers and people around them and hundreds of dollars being wasted on them, will it ever stop? These are the aspects which I believe are of most interest on this topic of smoking should be banned and are what im going to present today.

Underage smoking, a big problem we are faced with in today’s society, research from the Queensland government shows that in Queensland just one of Australias’ states 2 million illegal sales were made to underage children last year, if this many illegal underage sales are made just in one year think about how many children worldwide are smoking rite this instant.

There are an estimated 1.5 billion smokers in the world, 20% of which are aged 13-15, that means 300 million ages 13-15 are smokers, think of these childs futures if they are smoking at such a young age, the cigarette companies don’t care about how many people are dying, suffering or hurt by their products all they care about is the billions of

dollars they receive every year by selling these chemical filled products.

We as children should be enjoying our youth, socializing, having fun, playing sports , enjoying life as a youngster while we can. Children, and teenagers shouldn’t be wasting their time and money on something which will give them bad health and the inability to physicall perform like they used to before they started smoking, smoking makes the user unfit, if one were a serious smoker he would be inable to run and last as long as he /she used to , being fit as a child is a very big thing, gathering together on weekends, and holidays enjoying a game of cricket, or soccer at the field is what being a kid is all about, it’s the time we get to have fun with no worries about finance, shelter and work it’s a time when we shouldn’t be spending our lunch or going out money our caregivers give us on cigarettes, it’s a problem that is increasing in this world, and if smoking continues to be legal and not banned, this problem of our worlds children being smokers will just increase into higher numbers making it a worse place to live in, also for the children who are affected passively, whilst they are just hanging around with their mates not smoking but affected by the pollutants their friends are breathing out.

Bad health is another aspect why smoking should be banned Smoking is an important risk factor for the three diseases that cause most deaths in Australia: heart disease, stroke and lung cancer. The mixture of nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette people smoke temporarily increases your heart rate and blood pressure, straining your heart and blood vessels. This can cause heart attacks and stroke. It slows your blood flow, cutting off oxygen to your feet and hands. Some smokers end up having their limbs amputated

Research shows that every 6.5 seconds someone in the world dies from a smoking related illness i.e., heart disease, stroke and lung cancer. Now is it really worth having cigarettes legal, I think not, why should a substance which kills and causes disease and illness be available to buy at nearly every shop you visit, it shouldn’t, lung cancer from smoking is caused by the tar in the tobacco smoke, men who smoke are ten times more likely to die from lung cancer then non smokers, now people must thing. Is smoking really worth dying for prematurely? Smoking causes disease and is a slow way to die. The strain put on your body by smoking often causes years of suffering.

Emphysema is an illness that slowly rots your lungs. People with emphysema often get bronchitis again and again, and suffer lung and heart failure. Commercials which im sure all of you have seen are made by the government to show people the affects of smoking and to try get people to quit. The commercials might seen horrible and disgusting but its what is actually happening to the human body , examples of them are the display of the amount of tar in the brain and the display of the effects of the lungs rotting, its not a pretty picture but these cigarettes are the cause , and must be banned. And finally the third aspect of why smoking should be banned is the money being spent every year on cigarettes.

The multi million dollar cigarette industries arn’t concerned about whether its users are going to lead a healthy life and die of natural causes, all they are after is the money, they invent these products and seduce people by putting addictive chemicals in them , so when people try it, they feel like they can’t stop and must have another.

Not everyone has the self power to decide to quite, most people don’t even think about quitting anymore because they say its just to hard for them , im sure nearly everyone in this room has herd that before, smoking should be banned, not only are adults wasting ridiculus amounts of money on cigarettes but children are to, eligibility to buy cigarettes is 18 and over,it’s the law, but so many corner stores break this law just to make a measly 10 dollars per packet, it’s just not rite, law enforcement cant find and catch all these perks who illegally sell cigarettes to minors for the profits so smoking should be banned, the money that people are spending on cigarettes can be put to so much better use, in things such as better clothing, shelter, food and luxuries, parents can buy better things for their children so they can have a better education, and children who smoke can save their money on something more useful like school books even toys, its better then rotting their lungs and minimizing their life expectancy.

If smoking continues to be legal and doesn’t become band all these problems that we are faced with today will just increase and our world will be a worse place, children shouldn’t be smoking, people shouldn’t be dying every 6.5 seconds from a smoking related death and people should not be spending thousands of dollars a year on these products filled with chemicals that only cause pain and suffering, these are the reasons why smoking should be banned.

There are lots of negative effects of smoking. Smoking has been proven to be very dangerous for health. As one cigarette contains more than 4000 chemical substances, therefore, it causes for many dangerous diseases such as heart attacks, asthma, bronchitis or lung cancer. According to a recent report in Britain close to 3,500 people are killed each year in road accidents and 120,000 are killed by smoking. Furthermore, smoking costs governments millions of dollars because of the large number of people who need treatment in hospitals for smoking-related problems. Moreover, passive smoking is also a major concern today. Recent research shows that non-smokers can suffer from health problems if they spend long periods of time among people who do smoke. In the UK children whose parents are smoke are three times as likely to start smoking themselves . This world would be a better place without cigarettes.

However, the decision of whether to smoke or not to smoke is for each individual to make. People should not smoke in a room or a place where there are non smokers. Smoking has become very common and fashionable, especially among young boys. This habit usually begins at school when boys try to experiment with every new thing that they can lay their hands on. Despite the warnings given by doctors about the ill-effects of smoking, people continue to smoke. Smokers are addicted to it, and even if they want to, they cannot refrain from picking up a cigar or cigarette and puffing away. Some youngsters smoke for the sake of society and some feel that would make them appear liberated and broadminded. In the beginning, a teenager may take a few puffs from his friend’s cigarette; then comes a time when it becomes an indispensable part of his life.

Several puffs lead to the formation of a habit. Soon smoking begins to affect the health of the smoker. He becomes a chain-smoker. This smoke is toxic and the nicotine in the cigarette is known to cause cancer. It is ironic that despite the fact that every smoker is aware of the ill effects of smoking, he does not give it up. Tobacco companies are doing very well all over the world. Every packet of cigars or cigarettes has a warning inscribed in it: cigarette smoking is injurious to health.” Yet the smoker never reads this warning and even if he reads it he never pays heed to it. The government raises the price of tobacco every year. This is usually done to discourage people from smoking.

“Each year, an estimated 443,000 people die prematurely from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, and another 8.6 million live with a serious illness caused by smoking”(Mehta). One of the most common problems today that are killing people, all over the world, is smoking. Many people start this horrible habit because of stress, personal issues and high blood pressure. Some people began showing off or some people wanted to enjoy it . One cigarette can result in smoking others, which can lead to major addiction. When someone smokes a cigarette they are not only hurting themselves, but are also hurting others around them. Smoking affects the body by turning the skin color yellow, producing an odor, and making the skin age faster. “Smoking also causes diseases such as coronary heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer”(Mehta). Not long ago smoking was considered a casual past time with people smoking in restaurants and around children but now we know the consequences can now be dire to the environment, your health, and the others around you.

The smoking addiction is quite the costly habit. In many cities, a pack of cigarettes costs close to $10. For the two pack per day smoker, this averages more than $500 per month. This sort of expense can be eliminated from one’s life thus causing one to have a much more flexible budget. The costs of smoking, however, is not limited only to one’s bank account. The costs of smoking has a great impact on one’s health also.

When people are addicted, they have a compulsive need to seek out and use a substance, even when they understand the harm it can cause. “Someone who is addicted to cigarette smoking smokes two or more packs per day, anywhere and for more than a few years” (Lee). It is actually the nicotine in tobacco that is addictive. “Each cigarette contains about 10 milligrams of nicotine. Because the smoker inhales only some of the smoke from a cigarette, and not all of each puff is absorbed in the lungs, a smoker gets about 1 to 2 milligrams of the drug from each cigarette”( Mehta). Although that may not seem like much, it is enough to create an addiction. Nicotine is only one of more than 4,000 chemicals, many of which are poisonous, found in the smoke from tobacco products.

Cigarettes poison the body both physically and mentally and also have social effects. Smoking can lead to social problems because it causes bad breath, and odorous smell and often isolation. Every time the smoker speaks, a pungent smell emanates from the mouth and towards the listener. Smoking also causes a pungent smell to linger on the body and clothes of the smoker. The smoking smell is very strong and it affects the listener. The smoke attaches to the body of the smoker.

Smoking is not only dangerous to your well being but also the health of others and the environment. When you breathe in smoke that comes from the end of a lit cigarette, cigar, or pipe that is exhaled by a smoker, you’re inhaling almost the same amount of chemicals as the smoker breathes in. “Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 different chemical compounds, more than 50 of which are known to cause cancer” (Shields ). These are just a few of the chemicals that float into your lungs when you are exposed to secondhand smoke

Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Some of these harmful effects are immediate. Nicotine addiction is hard to beat because it changes your brain. The brain develops extra nicotine receptors to accommodate the large doses of nicotine from tobacco. When the brain stops getting the nicotine it’s used to, the result is nicotine withdrawal. A person may feel anxious, irritable, and have strong cravings for nicotine. Smoking takes a toll on one’s mouth. Smokers have more oral health problems than non-smokers, such as mouth sores, ulcers and gum disease. Smokers are also more likely to get cancers of the mouth and throat. Smoking can cause the skin to be dry and lose elasticity, leading to wrinkles and stretch marks. The skin tone may become dull and grayish. By one’s early 30s, wrinkles can begin to appear around the mouth and eyes, causing drastic aging. Smoking raises your blood pressure and puts stress on your heart. Over time, stress on the heart can weaken it, making it less able to pump blood to other parts of the body. Carbon monoxide from inhaled cigarette smoke also contributes to a lack of oxygen, making the heart work even harder. This increases the risk of heart disease, including heart attacks. Smoking effects the body by turning the skin color yellow, producing an odor, and making the skin age more.

Smoking is considered as one of the most dangerous habits of an individual. “20% of persons living in the United States still smoke, and smoking remains the number one cause of preventable mortality” (Tolstrup). There are numerous harmful as well as dangerous effects related to smoking. Carbon monoxide and nicotine in cigarette smoke has been related to several adverse impacts on the lungs and heart. Smoking causes damage to the internal body, causing alterations to the quality of internal organs. For example, smoking affects the lung by damaging the air sac. Damaging the air sac limits the passageway of air, and progressively leads to emphysema. Smoking also leads to the increased probability of cancer, such as lung cancer and heart failure. Ultimately, reliance on smoking damages the human body, causing more susceptibility to diseases. “Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease.”(Shields). Carbon monoxide and nicotine both put a strain on the heart by making it work faster. They also increase your risk of blood clots. Other chemicals in cigarette smoke damage the lining of your coronary arteries, leading to furring of the arteries. If you smoke, you increase your risk of developing heart disease.

“Smoking cigarettes is harmful to health”(Lee), that is a warming sentence which shown on pack of cigarettes. Therefore, the effects of smoking cigarettes on human’s life are serious. Smoking has become a trend in today’s world, even though people know how harmful it is. Smoking causes are obvious it will ruin your health and give you series of health issues. Smoking affects not only you but other around you. It is terrible for health as well as personal appearance. In the end, those who choose to smoke and the others around them are affected the most by this life threatening activity. Smoking is a habit which individuals find difficult to quit. Both the causes and effects of smoking has hazardous outcomes that are preventable. The thorough understanding of the chemical as well as smoking internal and external effects of the body are important in order to to battle the issue facing the entire nation.

Smoking Should Be Banned in Public Places

Smoking is one of the leading killers in world innocent people shouldn’t die because of it. Therefore, in my opinion, smoking in public places should be prohibited.

Firstly, cigarette smoke is very harmful to non-smokers. For years people have been smoking in public thinking “it’s my body, I can do whatever I want to it” but in fact smoking not only harms the smoker, but also those around him or her. It causes more damage to their lungs from breathing it. So, people should not be allowed to smoke around other people in public.

Secondly, smoking is a cause of pollution. There is a lot of research that shows that many kinds of gases that is released by smoking and is harmful for the environment, such as carbon dioxide. Polluting the environment affect seriously human being’s health. So, smoking should be banned in public.

Thirdly, smoking in front of young people is a bad influence on them. Young people tend to copy what they observe and are the influenced by the normality of smoking around them. If anyone smoking in front of a child, the child may be think it that smoking is a good thing but it is not. The more young people are exposed to smoking the better the chance of them becoming smokers themselves. More importantly, young people can be encouraged to smoke and use other addictive drugs, which is very dangerous. Thus, smoking in public places should be prohibited immediately.

In conclusion, from three reasons mentioned above: Cigarette smoke is very harmful to non-smokers, smoking is a cause of pollution, Smoking in front of young people is a bad influence on them, I do hope that I would never again like to see people smoking in public,
