Is it a coincidence that every successful person you come across turns out to be a firm believer in himself? According to most findings, entrepreneurship is based on factors including passion, risk taking, vision and most importantly self-belief. Another aspect you find very commonly is that these entrepreneurs were known to none, except their family. Archive any interview of a family member of the entrepreneur, they’d always say he seemed a bit different and discrete. Entrepreneurs go through a lot and having encountered failure so many times, the only thing that makes entrepreneurs hang in there is self-confidence.
Faith and persistence are the qualities what made them what they are now. According to a report released by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, there are 582 million entrepreneurs around the world involved in the process of running or starting their own business. This stream of entrepreneurship is getting bigger and stronger every day. Everyone is coming up with new ideas, trying to make income by solving their society’s problems.
[1]Entrepreneurial concept of earning is quite different to a regular business approach, rather entrepreneurship includes more of giving than earning. The conventional approach of doing business is now long gone, thanks to entrepreneurship paving its way in today’s time due to its approach of giving more rather than receiving more. Entrepreneurial Businesses have set new paths with “customer satisfaction” as one of their core priorities of creating a business in the 21st century. As easy as it may sound, there’s still a long list of hardships an entrepreneur has to go through towards climbing the ladder to success.
This paper is a thorough research on two chosen entrepreneurs naming James Chin Moody from Australia and Rehan Allahwala hailing from Pakistan.
James Chin Moody received fame by breaking the monopoly of renowned delivery networks and offered cheap and simple parcel delivery service. Sendle, as it is known now, boasts itself as the largest courier service in Australia. Being the sole mastermind behind all the functioning of Sendle, this delivery service is growing stronger by a fixed ratio of 20% each year.
James has always been outstanding with his communication skills, academic and business professionals. Being an electrical engineer by profession, he worked as a satellite engineer playing a key role in the process of launching Australia’s first Satellite launched after a long period of 30 years. James Chin Moody have tasted experience in managing roles as an Executive Director, Development at the CSIRO, Australian National Commissioner for UNESCO, member of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology Advisory Board and Trustee for the Australian Museum. He was also one of the panel members on the ABC channel program “the new inventors” during 2011-2014. James got his PhD in innovation theory from Australian National University. He is considered an expert and lead thinker in innovation and sustainability of a business model. For now, James is solely focused on successfully running this inexpensive and reliable courier service all across Australia.
During one of his interviews he was asked how an electrical engineer Moody moved from satellite development at CSIRO to starting his own delivery service. He explained how he always loved building things and how badly he wanted to get back into it. The whole concept of starting Sendle was a marketplace where people could exchange and give away goods to people for free having a small delivery fee. One of the difficulties he faced after launching the company was the delivering of goods and products at cheaper rates than other mainstream delivery services. James Moody carried out a campaign where he invited several firms and companies to come up with solutions together. After a while, Sendle emerged as a successfully growing company. This firm is now becoming Australia’s number one parcel delivery service for Home enterprises, Small businesses, Makers, reUsers, Social Enterprise, NFPs, Volunteer organisations, Sharers, Recyclers.
In another part of the world, an entrepreneur named Rehan Allahwala is known to all in the country of Pakistan. Due to his father being an entrepreneur himself, Rehan freed himself from the regular 8-5 job mind-set. His entrepreneurial journey started when he was 8, and the very first of the products he sold were candies, stationary and other useful material around him in school. At 13, he started playing with technology making voice digitizers and selling them to people around him until the age of 36, Rehan had gone through 51 different ventures including Super Technologies, DIDX, Rehanschool and Add me. Rehan’s constant efforts were not bearing fruits, but like a common entrepreneur he continued having firm belief in himself and his efforts. One of the difficulties he faced along the journey was his visa rejection by the US embassy. He tried for years to visit US to explore the online venture he made (Super Technologies) but visa approval became a hurdle for his intended visit. But instead of losing hope, he kept on working. Another venture performed under the banner of Super Technologies was of DIDX which turned out to be a huge success. Partners like Google, IBM and Microsoft ended up being one of the partners of this VOIP-based wholesale DID Phone Numbers market place. A long list of ventures can be found on Mr Rehan’s LinkedIn profile.
Rehan is more of a helper than a receiver. He took an early retirement off his work from Super technologies and DIDX, returning to Pakistan. The team, including Rehan Ahmed and Suzanne Bowen headed back to the basics, and their next goal was educating the poor, providing them with the basic technologies which is a new aspect for them in their schooling life. In this regard, Rehan came up with Rehanschool.com and conducted another campaign making people from all around the world add each other via social media and get to know each other. Such prospects arranged and funded by Rehan proves how much he operates under the umbrella of entrepreneurship. For him, the concept of entrepreneurship is clearly influencing the people around the globe, promoting leadership instead of job work. Rehan has been working side by side with communities, universities and colleges in Pakistan promoting the culture of Entrepreneurship, leadership and independency among the youth in this region.
James Moody has always carried traits involving leadership and management, he went through a number of activities. These activities include him being named as a Young Professional Engineer in 2000, [4] and later on listed in the top 100 influential engineers in 2005. The fact that he had worked so hard achieving his previous goals and never giving up reflects how much learning process an entrepreneur goes through before sailing the ship of entrepreneurship. Dr James has always lived a life full of achievements and there’s no chance or anywhere he got sucked into uncertainty being what he is, which makes us deduce that entrepreneurs always possess values like self-belief and high self-esteem. An entrepreneur does not only care about his business and its net income but also focuses on the well-being of the customers and the environment. James has fulfilled this criteria with his implementation of carbon neutral materials for packaging used in delivery services which are not only good for the environment but for the customers as well. In today’s age of increasing global warming, James’ contribution to helping his country achieve minimum carbon emission is commendable. This also helps giving his company a better image overall.
On the other hand, Rehan Allahwala has made his way up from carrying out small workshops to heading big companies and engaging native people in business social networking websites. Ever since the beginning, he has been independent, not done a job and trusted his gut feeling about him being an entrepreneur. Astonishingly, even as a teenager he never gave into a constant fear of failure and regret, continuing his journey towards his one and only goal. Similar to James Moody, Rehan has also contributed to the society but in a different way. Rehan throughout his life studied and learned entrepreneurship, so after taking an early retirement from his work, he returned back to his native country with a desire to contribute his lifetime experiences of entrepreneurship to the people he grew up with. His motive behind introducing technology amongst the poor was so that they do not feel alienated about the idea of modern technology was a huge success. It paved a new path for people who wanted to learn about information technology but were not receiving proper resources from their government. He gave away free technological products to the deserving people in his society by conducting several social media activities. While coaching people he stressed on self-education through platforms like YouTube and Udemy.
When compared, Rehan Allahwala has a pure entrepreneurial journey, whereas Dr James has made his way to entrepreneurship by doing a couple of jobs. But one thing in common about both their journeys is that with hard work, persistence and self-confidence, no feat can be unachieved.
James kick started his career with degree relevant jobs, working hard to achieve par his peers’ expectations. He managed to score jobs regarding leadership and excelled, winning several awards for his work. His work as an engineer always impressed the Australian authorities while as soon as knew he had learned and worked enough to get his own.
