Book Review: Novel 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' by Stephen Chbosky

Categories: Novel

Growing up, I saw myself as a misfit or as the odd man out. At a young age I discovered the novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky and it has transformed my life ever since. Because of this book, I see myself and the world in a different light. For most young adults, it's hard to find their own path in the world without worrying about what others may think of them. Making it easy to connect to The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie the main character, is a freshman in highschool who faces a dark past and a looming future.

All over the world teens and young adults connects to Charlie. When I was little, like Charlie, I was made fun of or ¨bullied¨ making it easy to connect to him. To many teens including myself, it's hard to not feel alone in such a big world. When one feels so small in such a large world, it almost feels as if the world is caving in on them, and that there's no escape.

Charlie showed me and many others that no one is truly ever alone and life moves forward no matter what, weather or not you chose to move along with it.

The world as a hole is broken in its own way and it's important to recognize it and accept it for what it is. We only get one chance in this life, so we have to live it to the fullest and realize that our past isn't going to determine our future.

If you want to change something from your past that you don't like, then you can if you just make an attempt. For you only fail if you don't try. It's also important to remember that not everyone is going to go through the same exact thing, but many different versions of their own personal anguish. Perks has also helped me to keep an open mind towards others and the world itself because you never truly know what someone is going through until you go through it yourself. In such a big world, you also need to be willing to learn from others but also from your own opinion, rather than only listening to what everyone else has to say. Because of the novel, Perks of Being a Wallflower, it has helped me realize that maybe I'm not always truly alone and the world isn't such a scary place, but in fact it's filled of people who are just like me, afraid of the unknown. Perks of Being a Wallflower had a huge impact on my life and how I view everything around me.

It had taught me many life lessons that everyone needs to hear at certain parts of their lives. For a while and sometimes still today, I find it very hard to except myself but Perks has taught me that life is a constant process of figuring out yourself. To be nothing but yourself even if it takes a while for you to find out what that even means. Everyone goes through hard times and reading this book I have learned that happy memories can get you through hard times.Reminiscing on happy times can bring back smiles when they are most needed. It makes the uncertainty of the future a little less frightening. We must all learn to take the time to be nostalgic with the people you love if there is a frightening change ahead. It offers a sense of stability and allows you to hold on to the happy memories of the past. Still, you can't get too caught up in the happy memories or you can get stuck, and forget to keep moving forward. Another important lesson that has affected me is the lesson of value and ones worth. To be of value to others, you need to value yourself first. All in all, The Perks of Being a Wallflower has helped me be more optimistic, mindful, patient, and more accepting of myself and the world around me.
