In examining Benjamin R. Barber's compelling work, "America Skips School," a disconcerting reality comes to light. The essay serves as an awakening, shedding light on the formidable challenges faced by many disheartened youths today and the potential repercussions for the nation's future. Barber underscores the pivotal role of teachers, emphasizing their responsibility not only in shaping the destiny of individual students but also in steering the course of the entire nation. The narratives presented are not mere anecdotes; they reflect the stark truth that Americans can no longer afford to overlook.
It is imperative for society to confront this truth head-on and earnestly strive to rectify the struggles that previous generations have been content to ignore. Our children need us to guide them, necessitating improvements in education, such as bolstering teachers' salaries, adopting a year-round school calendar, and, most significantly, assuming collective responsibility.
From a logical standpoint, parents delegate to teachers a role for which they themselves were not expressly trained.
In reality, teachers not only serve as caretakers for many students but are also burdened with responsibilities that surpass those encountered by lawyers or engineers. The influence of family, friends, and teachers plays a pivotal role in shaping a youth's trajectory in life. Teachers provide the fuel, namely determination, and the directions, which encompass knowledge, enabling students to reach their desired destinations. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook 2002-03 Edition, the primary impetus for changes in education lies in preparing students for the future workforce.
Teachers, therefore, serve as facilitators, providing the tools and creating an environment for students to develop the skills required for their future endeavors. These are the kind of educators we should aspire to have. To attract and retain more highly qualified teachers, a fundamental shift in salary structures is imperative, as higher salaries will inevitably lead to an increase in qualified applicants, thereby elevating the overall quality of teaching.
As summer vacations approach, most students tend to forget what they have learned or struggle to apply their knowledge effectively until school recommences. However, this process becomes less efficient as the academic difficulty intensifies. Implementing a year-round school calendar provides teachers with more time for effective instruction and allows students ample opportunity to absorb the material thoroughly. When teachers dedicate individualized time to tutor students, the likelihood of academic failure diminishes. While summer school is an option, the associated fees pose a significant barrier for students attending inner-city schools. Therefore, transitioning to a year-round academic calendar is not just a pragmatic solution; it is a critical step towards addressing educational inequities and ensuring that all students have equal access to continuous learning opportunities.
In contemporary society, a significant number of families have both adults working outside the home, leaving children unsupervised during crucial hours. While teachers guide students during school hours, the absence of parental regulation at home transforms the house into a mere transit point rather than a nurturing environment. Establishing a strong connection between parents and children is vital for maintaining a healthy atmosphere within the home. Beyond the household, changes occur, influencing the individuals with whom the child associates outside the home. Parents shoulder the responsibility of knowing their child's whereabouts at all times, understanding their child's social circle, and establishing clear guidelines for when the child should return home. Collaboratively, parents and children should devise a weekly schedule that encompasses dedicated study time, recreational activities, and meaningful family communication.
Irrespective of the challenges and disagreements that may arise within the educational system or homes, the undeniable fact remains: our children need us. Many students require encouragement to engage in their studies or participate in class activities because they may not possess the foresight that parents and teachers do regarding their future. Elevating teachers' salaries will undoubtedly attract a more qualified faculty, extending the school year to a year-round model provides additional time for students to grasp and internalize essential concepts, and parents must assume an active role in providing the love and attention necessary to guide their children toward success. These are the key components that Barber emphatically underscores as crucial for fostering a superior academic system. The yearning for an effective educational system has persisted, but meaningful change requires collective commitment and action. Until we actively address these issues, our children, the future of America, will continue to struggle in the fast-paced and ever-evolving society we inhabit.
